Watch Blackfish and it will open your eyes a bit. I loved Shamu as a little kid, but as I've gotten older I think I'd rather see them in the wild.

What is the end-point you have in mind, Chizz? Abolition of factory farming for red-meat animals? Abolition of use of animals strictly for entertainment purposes?

You realize pigs are arguably smarter than orcas and most outside the primate family? You going to give up pork to protest the overcrowded factory farms they live in?

I'm not opposed to standards for treatment of animals, but you don't get to apply different standards for different animals based on how awesome or majestic or fluffy and cute they are. Hardly anyone outside of PETA is going to complain about chimpanzees in captivity or being used for entertainment because they aren't considered "cool".

And where do you draw the line for what constitutes intelligent animals, anyways?

So how will this end?
The capture of orcas ended years ago. SeaWorld stated that it will end the internal reproduction of them. So, if 93's statistics are correct, the whales should all die off in about 20 years or so. Or maybe sooner if they are released to the ocean.

SeaWorld also said it will end the shows. This will likely reduce the revenue that they generate. Revenue that is used to rescue and rehabilitate distressed animals in the wild. So when a dolphin or manatee is found in distress, you can forget about getting assistance from SeaWorld.
In the movie "Patton", General Bradley shows his displeasure with Patton's rapid push across Sicily, claiming that many lives were lost for moving too fast. Patton replies "General Bradley......it's time to consider how many
casualties we'd have......if we were still crawling on that goddamn road."

Education: I could understand the argument that we probably know all we need to know about orcas at this point in time. So anything else that we could learn from them is probably small compared to the data we have gained to date. So I would agree that the education has probably run it's course.

Glad this is happening. Having grown up in SD, I always hated Sea World. Not just because of the Shamu thing (anyone with a brain knows a whale doesn't belong in a tank) but because the SD Zoo is WWWWAAAAAYYYY better than SW, and does a hell of a lot more for environmental conservation that SW ever does.

Also SW charges for parking and the Zoo doesn't.

We did that one last year with the Scouts. Wasn't terrible, but just a small aquarium so you feel like you run out of stuff. We did get to sleep in the room with the sharks, though, so that was cool.

Did the Natural History museum this winter - I heard the one at the Penn Museum is pretty cool.
