Yup. That’s all part of the equation. Under this speculative scenario, the TV revenues would be much less for tier 2 so the those folks will have to figure out what works best for them based on the new revenue projections. Maintaining the current 85 scholarships and FCOA won’t be cheap and also unnecessary given that the tier 2 folks are officially no longer on par with “the big boys”. It would make more sense to drop the scholarship amount if FCOA is the new norm (which it is).Skjellyfetti wrote:If there was a merger with G5 and upper-echelon FCS - in addition to scholarship discrepancy - you'd also have to work out "cost of attendance" stipends.
We'll be paying our football players and men's and women's basketball players a $3,400 stipend next year.
Some FCS programs won't have a problem stepping up to do this. And a few have already announced they plan to, right?
But, again - if there's a merger between G5 and FCS... I think we're only talking about upper echelon FCS programs.

Yeah I think the relegation component is a stretch. Once the P5 decides who is in, it'll be set for good.Pwns wrote:Whenever I read an article like this, I usually wonder if the person writing it really has any understanding of the business side of college sports. Relegation? Seriously?![]()
I said this on AGS and I'll repeat it here...Power 5 teams don't pay G5 and FCS teams to play in their stadiums out of charity. They do it because it's a business model that works for them. If P5s only play other P5s then home games for a lot of big-money programs are lost and revenue they don't have to share with other conference mates is lost. If the TV money dries up like the article suggests then what incentive is there to only play other P5 teams?
I like the idea of 3 subdivisions with the middle one being the G5 and the top of the FCS, but I don't see it happening. Remember, the G5 gained voting power in the autonomy proposal and is getting a larger cut of post-season money from the CFP than they got in the old BCS system. Doesn't seem to me like the P5 is trying to create a separation to me.
I also agree about the P5 money games, but again if the network says to drop them in exchange for a bigger TV deal...guess what, they are gone.
The "more money" and "more power" granted to the G5 was a ruse by the P5 to get them to go along with the autonomy vote. They have neither in comparison to what the P5 gained under the new system. The new CFB actually give the G5 an even smaller voice. Remember, these changes didn't happen until the G5 crashed the BCS party, the autonomy situation was all about distancing themselves from the G5.

Re: FBS Conference Realignment
The problem I have with relegation is the divisional standing of each sport within an athletic program. A can of worms is opened up here, specifically relating to the long-standing rule that outside of one "showcase" sport (see lacrosse at Johns Hopkins), all sports must be aligned in the same division. Does relegation occur within the affected sport only (thereby abrogating this rule), or does it hit the ENTIRE program, thereby making the other sports suffer for the lack in one sport? Does a school have to have failure in a preponderance of the athletic program to trigger relegation? It could be hard to prove that when a school like Sac has annual D-I success in low-budget sports like gymnastics and volleyball.
Relegation is a "thing" for professional sports that exist within a country at multiple acknowledged levels where no affiliation exists (a la MLB). Nothing like that exists in North America, save for possibly soccer. MLB/NHL's minor league affiliation systems and even the Canadian junior hockey system would not work with relegation. Even for women's semipro football, all leagues are theoretically at the same level, so relegation wouldn't work there. And it would be a disaster to invoke it at the college level for AT LEAST the reasons noted above, and also for those noted by SD and others in this thread.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

That might be a good idea in theory, but the Vanderbilt, Purdue, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Boston College, Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas and Illinois (etc.) of the P5 world aren't going to let it happen. Those teams will never even smell a bowl game again if they are relegated to playing only other P5 teams.SDHornet wrote:Yeah I think the relegation component is a stretch. Yeah I doubt the powers that be are going to let the bottom feeders hinder a shot a TV deal with a mega payout. If the bottom feeders take issue with any of the new demands made by the network, they will be reminded that they can go elsewhere if they so chose.Baldy wrote: That might be a good idea in theory, but the Vanderbilt, Purdue, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Boston College, Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas and Illinois (etc.) of the P5 world aren't going to let it happen. Yup. You won't see these folks going against the P5 decision to break away when it comes down.Baldy wrote:Right...football drives the bus at Duke, UNC, Kansas, Indiana, etc.SDHornet wrote:They could bail and zero fucks would be given. Everyone knows football drives the bus.

Re: FBS Conference Realignment
The FB playoff TV deal is up in 2025, MM TV deal is up in 2024. (Kinda convenient how they both end around the same time). So I don't think there will be much movement until a year or two prior when the P5 starts positioning itself for the mega payouts. In the meantime the P5 will continue to further distance itself from the G5 and flex their monetary muscles in doing so.Baldy wrote:When.SDHornet wrote: Yup. The P5 teams would lose access to the NCAA Tournament revenues if they break away since the NCAA holds the CBS contract. I don't think Duke, etc., would like that.

Re: FBS Conference Realignment
Meh, P5 already controls most of the credits (and dollars) doled out. This contract locks MM up in its current format, a format that already allows D1A, D1AA, and D1AAA to compete against each other. I don't see why this setup precludes the P5 schools from doing what they want with their FB programs while also continuing to score big in the MBB dollars. The autonomy precedent pretty much allows the P5 to do whatever they want.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Really? http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nc ... /82939124/SDHornet wrote: Yup. You better let UNC know something they don't because the NCAA is getting ready to lower the hammer.SDHornet wrote:Meh, P5 already controls most of the credits (and dollars) doled out. It was about anti-trust lawsuits that were about to do far more damage to the P5. So, they suddenly decided to have a playoff and give G5 an "access bowl."
I think it's only a matter of time (and FAR more likely than the scenarios in the OP's article) until the playoffs are expanded and the highest ranked G5 school gets a spot in the playoffs.

Re: FBS Conference Realignment
Huh? G5 already had access to the BCS bowls...hell, it's that access that prompted the P5 to move the target yet again. And yes the playoffs will be expanded to 8...and the G5 will still not be give a spot unless they have a program that runs the program and finishes in the top 10...good luck with that.Skjellyfetti wrote:It wasn't about distancing themselves from G5.SDHornet wrote: The "more money" and "more power" granted to the G5 was a ruse by the P5 to get them to go along with the autonomy vote. And if a G5 ever made it, they would be the 8 seed. Just leave it at 4.
