Fed govt wants to monitor social media of employees
"The Office of Personnel Management is preparing for a pilot program to automatically track public social media postings of people applying for security clearances......."

And remember this isn't just upon hiring but also every 5 years..love some of the comments...
"Brought to you by the same goons that allowed China to steal the personal information of 21 million current and former federal employees...
...This technology will obviously be used wisely. No one's speech with be intimidated. No one holding a clearance will fear their livelihood is at risk by associating with others. Nobody will have to hide offline to talk to and meet with friends and family the Government might deem 'dangerous'. Our military and intelligence community people will not be gradually purified to accept the Will of the State unquestioningly. No ideological bureaucrat would ever take advantage of this capability, especially at the IRS or DHS. No one will create anonymous accounts to voice unpopular opinions anyway. Many terrorists will clearly be caught red-handed this way. Great idea. What could go wrong."

I don't see what's wrong with this. It's public information.
You should direct your angst toward the NSA's bulk collection of private information. Seems a little worse, imo.

I thought they were already doing this?
Or maybe I thought they simply blocked access to social media sites while at work.
I don't know what I thought actually.

You can pretty much get everything at the place I work now; FB and EBay for sure.bandl wrote:I thought they were already doing this?

I'm sure this site could be accessed, but there's no way in hell I'm putting this site in my browsing history at work. I only talk to you bitches on my phone!
Other places I worked did in fact block all non-necessary sites.

The last time I actually worked in an office for someone else was so long ago that they actually did block facebook/ebay/twitter/etc, and I didn't have a smartphone then (just a crummy flip phone!93henfan wrote:You can pretty much get everything at the place I work now; FB and EBay for sure.bandl wrote:I thought they were already doing this?

Anyone who has a public Facebook page- government employees or not- is stupid.
I deal with literally 10s of Nigerian scams daily where people have had their photos and other documents farmed to create false identities in order to set up scams or worse.
That said, criminals love to show off- when I was a cop we called facebook "thugbook" because dudes on probation would post public pics of themselves flashing guns and contraband using their real names. If you are putting dumb things on your public facing social media site then you deserve all the discomfort coming your way.

It definitely makes you pretty lo hanging fruit.89Hen wrote:Skjellyfetti wrote:

Google "Ayo Kimathi" if you want to know how dumb some people, in this case a (former) DHS employee, can be.

If it's acceptable for the private sector to do this, fuck the government employees!

this story from today is more suitable for your angst, imo
private emails are private and should be protected by the fourth amendment.
public facebook posts... not so much.

public facebook posts... not so much.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-micro ... SKCN0XB22UMicrosoft Corp (MSFT.O) has sued the U.S. government for the right to tell its customers when a federal agency is looking at their emails, the latest in a series of clashes over privacy between the technology industry and Washington.
The lawsuit, filed on Thursday in federal court in Seattle, argues that the government is violating the U.S. Constitution by preventing Microsoft from notifying thousands of customers about government requests for their emails and other documents.
The government’s actions contravene the Fourth Amendment, which establishes the right for people and businesses to know if the government searches or seizes their property, the suit argues, and Microsoft's First Amendment right to free speech.
