If you're a NASCAR fan, you should be worried. I was the previous casual fan that became a much bigger fan via 24 and not I've lost interest. Could be a bigger trend.
The casual fans are already gone. The sport is ticking back up now. The racing is as exciting as it's been since pre-COT.

I actually like seeing the bandwagon fans gone. More access for real fans like me.

Tired of watching Kyle win. Won last week in the trucks and the Sprint race at Martinsville (I was there) and this week at TX in the Fri night Xfinity race and last night. Thats 4 wins in 8 days.

A frustrating night Truex, who had the best car. Led 141 laps, but due to 2 late cautions & tire tactics ended up finishing 6th. It was like a replay of the Kansas race last year. Tire falloff was very rapid. Jr finished 2nd.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/na ... /82865318/

Great night for Hendrick, all 4 cars in the top 8. Top 12 was all 4 Hnedrick cars + 2 Stewart Haas (although no longer an allliance still running Hendrick engines & chassis + all 4 JGR cars + affiliated Truex. The only non JGR & non Hendrick engine in the top 12 was Logano in 3rd. Not a good night for the Fords, only Logano in top 14...

Big NASCAR fan (3rd generation), but I just can't get into short track races. If you can't get over 100 mph, are you really "racing"?

:? They do get WELL OVER 100 mph at all 3 short tracks. At Martinsville close to 120 mph on the 800 ft straight aways. Then they are breaking hard in the turns getting down to close to 40 mph. Logano won the pole with a qualifying lap of over 97 mph. They are running avg green flag lap times in the 90s mph. Yeah if you look at the avg race lap times its usually around 75-80 mph. But that includes the caution laps which are at a crawl. And with all the beaten & banging there are usually a lot of cautions. 500 laps, 1000 times of hard breaking & acceleration per race.

And at Bristol (more banking) and Richmond (.75 mile) they run even faster. Last Aug Denny Hamlin qualified at 129.991 mph. In race trim they aren't hitting that, but on the 650 foot straightaways they have to be hitting in the 130s-140s mph.

Last year at Richmond Keselowski qualified at 126.618. Much slower in the corners, but they much faster on the straightaways (Backstretch - 860 feet; Frontstretch - 1290 feet). Last Sept Matt Kenseth won with an avg lap time of 100.353 mph. And that includes all the caution laps..

Current race breakdown:
short track: 6
1 mile: 6
1.5 mile: 11
2 mile: 3
Superspeedway: 4
Roadcourse: 2
Other: 4 (2 at Pocono, 1 at Indy, 1 Darlington

Race Hub (usually on 4x a week at 5 PM on FSI + at least 1 on the weekend) talked about this this past week. Can't find a link for it but did a fan poll with the question should NASCAR have more than 6 short track races..81% said yes.

You have to be trolling?

Martinsville is my favorite track. North Wilkesboro (RIP) was second. Old Richmond was third. Bristol next. New Richmond next. Darlington and Rockingham (RIP) next. Then Dover. Then everything beside Charlotte and its 1.5 mile clones. Then Charlotte and the cookie cutters.

The sad part is, when Charlotte was the only double dog leg intermediate track on the circuit it was exciting. Now that you see that layout for a third of the schedule it's nauseating.

You just can't go to a race at Martinsville and not have a good time.

Ditto on Martinsville- I went to my 2nd race there last weekend.

I've been to 10 tracks, but the only ones I've gone to more than once are the 3 short tracks and two of the three 1 mile tracks (Dover & Loudon). At the shorter tracks its easier to see the whole field, there's more beaten & banging, and the racing IMHOP is better to watch. Of the other 5 tracks I've been to all once: Indy (2.5 mile) in 2013- most boring race I've been to. Pocono (2.6 mile) in 2013- kind of boring. Chicagoland (1.5 mile) in 2014- kind of boring. Charlotte (1.5 miles) last Spring was ok. Darlington last summer (1.3 miles) -good

Going to all 3 short track races this month (Martinsville, Bristol next week, Richmond in 2 weeks) and 4 to 5 of the of the 6 this season (Martinsville in Oct and maybe Bristol in Aug). Throw in the mile tracks and will make Loudon in July and Dover in Sept (but not in May).

Short track racing is where its at..

I'll be at Loudon too with my dad and both sons. We're meeting Logano for the first time. Youngest son may have a coronary. Will be at both Dover races in our same seats since the track opened in 69. Actually, now that my boys go, I may be squeezed out. We have eight seats, but my dad and his three brothers split them. I don't mind missing one race a year. Youngest son is a crazy fan right now. I see a go kart in his very near future. We have a million dirt kart tracks around here.

Why doesn’t NASCAR have more short track races?
http://www.sbnation.com/nascar/2016/4/7 ... int-bowyer

Before 95' I think there were only two 1.5 mile tracks (Atlanta & Charlotte). Atlanta now has only 1 Sprint Cup race and Charlotte has 2 + the All Star race.

Looking at all the tracks built since 1995. 6 of the 7 are 1.5 miles.
-Homestead 95': 1.5 miles (1 Sprint race)
-Las Vegas 96': 1.5 miles (1 race)
-Texas 96': 1.5 miles (2 races)
-Autoclub 97': 2.0 miles (1 race)
-Kentucky: 00': 1.5 miles (1 race)
-Chicagoland 01': 1.5 miles (1 race)
-Kansas 01': 1.5 miles (2 races)

That's what I alluded to earlier. The Charlotte clones are a terrible group of McTracks. California (I refuse to call it a sponsor name) would be OK if they'd replace the track surface. Those weeping seams are ridiculous. For a track less than 20 years old and in an area without serious freeze/thaw or precipitation, that was a pretty serious design flaw.

They definitely should have made one of those six 1.5 mile McTracks built 95' to 01' a short track. I guess the best option to get another short track race would be if 1 of 2 Kansas races was moved 3.5 hrs north to Iowa Speedway. Kansas is an ISC (people who run NASCAR) track, and Iowa Speedway is owned by NASCAR, so that would work, no? And if the 1.5 mile tracks of Atlanta, Las Vegas, Kentucky, Chicagoland and Homestead all only have 1 Sprint race, why should Kansas have 2? The only other 1.5 mile with 2 are Charlotte and Texas..

Iowa Speedway could draw fans from:
-1/2 hr east of Des Moines
-1 1/4 hr sw Cedar Rapids
-3.5 hrs north of Kansas (2 Sprint dates)
-3.5+ hrs south of MSP
-4 hrs west of Chicago (Chicagoland 1 Sprint date)
-6 hrs NW of Indianapolis (1 Sprint date)

We talked about this last year.

Yeah, the spring race is rarely if ever a sellout at Bristol, but that's particularly bad. Looks about a quarter of capacity. NASCAR is still trying to recover from the death of Dale Earnhardt and the Great Recession, among the gazillion other reasons we've beaten to death here.

Jr has recovered nicely from immediately going two laps down due to the bad ECU on green. Top car a lap down at lap 80. Just needs a caution to get the lucky dog.

Yeah.

Kyle Larson looks good today. And Kyle Busch can't catch a flipping break.

Jr gave up the lucky dog but is gambling on another quick caution; takes wave around to get back on lead lap with old tires.

Real solid day for him, especially running against the cream of the crop cars that probably have a few more hp.

JGR quite obviously got too aggressive with their RF tire camber today. Ky Busch, Kenseth, and Hamlin all with RF issues all day.
