I always shudder at historical references like this that betray the fact that the issuer of such a statement has a very poor recollection or just simply knowledge of past historical events. The rise of Trump is no significant way is similar to the rise of Nazism in interbellum (I just made that word up but it sounded cool so I went with it) Germany. What's really frightening, John, is failing to compliment HI5's picture and analogizing those glorious globes to the Weimar Republic.

What facts?

The people of the United States are responding positively to demagoguery similar to that to which the people of Germany responded during the 1930s. Not the same, but similar.

I don't think Trump can cause anything like the havoc Hitler caused even if he were to be as bad as Hitler. Our system has too many checks and balances. But the situation is similar in that we are responding to a demagogue who is into the "make the country great again" kind of thing, establishing scapegoats, etc.

You comparing Trump to Hitler is based on nothing. You might as well saying Trump will be like Caligula.

Hitler was able to exploit the fears and prejudice of the population in a post war depression. Trump isn't doing that. He's not giving us a scapegoat for our problems. It's just not the same.

Who are our "Jews"? Illegal immigrants? That's a weak argument.

I completely disagree. Trump is exploiting the fears and prejudice of the population. No depression. But a perception of economic distress. A perception that jobs are being lost to other countries, that the country has lost its luster, etc. "Make America Great Again." Hitler was essentially saying "Make Germany Great Again."

And, yes, the "Jews" are the illegal immigrants. So are Muslims. Not that I don't think there are reasons for concern over illegal immigrants and Muslims. But they do play that role in Trump's demagoguery.

I think I'll just randomly post what Tom Ridge had to say about Trump because he really nailed it:

Comparing Trump to Hitler is asinine.
Why? Because you say so?

I see this kind of thing all the time. Someone notes similarities between one situation and another and it's "OHHHHHH....He's comparing THIS to THAT and they're NOT the SAME!!!!"

But two things don't have to be the same to be compared. There can be similarities. One does not have to be as "severe" as another for the two to be compared.

Trump is a demagogue to the extreme. He is exploiting economic insecurities, using scapegoats, and exploiting the perception that his country is "down" and that he is needed to make it great again.

Hitler was a demagogue. He exploited economic insecurities. He used scapegoats. And he exploited the perception that his country was "down" and that he was needed to make it great again.

I don't see how you can possibly argue against the truth of that.

And frankly, we don't know that Trump WOULDN'T be as dangerous as Hitler was if we didn't have a system the guards against that. To me he's clearly got serious autocratic tendencies.

Good Lord. I watched Hillary interviewed on CNN today and now I'm seeing replay of it. She sounds SO much more rational than Trump does. Here I am sitting here having always voted Republican and now I'm confronted with a situation in which the Democrat...even Hillary...sounds so much more rational than the Republican does.

And I'm going to have to vote for the sane, rational person. I'm going to have to vote for the Democrat.

We don't know that. But let's say it's true. If you want to say Hitler liked to fish and JSO liked to fish that's fine.

But that's a little different than saying two people were/are both demagogues, both scapegoat definable groups, both exploit exploit economic uncertainty, and both exploit perceptions that the country is "down" by saying "I will make it great again."

And I don't see how anybody could seriously argue against the proposition that Trump is doing that and Hitler did that.

Streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch.

You are a clown, JSO.

Are our jobs being lost to other countries?

Yup.

Ooops! Sounds as though Trump is using facts.

Is our economy healthy?

Nope.

Hmmm....sounds as though Trump is using another fact.

Are illegal Mexicans coming into our country through a porous border?

Yup. And ANY law abiding person should be upset...and EVERY law abiding citizen should want the deportation of people who come here illegally. Otherwise, we do not need a border.

So....once again, Trump is using facts (while his racist critics scream racism to try to make Trump seem like a demagogue).

Hasn't every presidential candidate run on a platform of making our economy great again?

Yup. It's the economy, stupid.

Oh, but Trump is bad because he wants a better economy.

Did Hillary run a campaign in 2008 where she intentionally surrounded herself with constant references to her being an American, while her own supporters started the Birther movement?

Yes.

FACT.

Oops! And you say you are voting for what you call a sane, qualified candidate.

I could go on and on, John...but you are in a fantasy land reserved for the religious whack jobs. There is no changing your mind, and you will continue to build your silly narrative around flimsy evidence and personal ad hominem attacks against Trump.

You've lost all credibility here. You usually base your posts on facts and measurable science. Now, you are simply dback.

It's not the same. It just isn't. It's similar in some regards ,but it's not the same situation. Germany 1932 doesn't equal USA 2016.

Alone with my thoughts during the 13 ½ hour drive home yesterday, a parable pertaining to the current Presidential race came to me.

It’s like I’m in the hinterlands with a Democrat and a Republican when I learn that I need to have heart surgery within two hours or I’ll die. Each of the two with me say there is someone they can get close by. Off they go.

The Democrat comes back with a woman and says, “I’ve got this heart surgeon here. But I only got her because she’s the only one quickly available. She’s awful. Fifty percent of her patients die on the table.”

I think, “No way I’m letting that person operate on me. I’ll wait on the Republican.”

Then the Republican brings me a mentally ill plumber.
