I always find NBA vs NHL arguments silly. Both sports are part of America's fabric. Hockey will most likely always be #4 for our lifetimes, but it's a great game, especially in the playoffs or the Olympics.
The NHL needs to get a better TV contract no doubt.

Leaving hockey aside: Why anyone would (to me) waste their time watching NBA basketball is beyond me. I know it's self evident that people like to watch it but the "why" escapes me.

I can't stand basketball. NBA has what, an average of 40 fouls per game? That's WAY too much referee interaction. They also have WAY too many time outs. WAIT, the action is getting way too exciting... TIME OUT.

I can't watch hockey or baseball on TV but I will go to a live game of it anytime. I can watch basketball on tv or live, doesn't make much difference to me. Hockey and baseball are really fun to go to live, I can't explain why but I'd go to either live any chance I got.

Blazer games are still quite the event. Really enjoyable watching fellow FCS alums Damian Lillard (Weber State) and CJ McCollum (Lehigh).

I agree about the timeouts, but has anyone ever noticed how different college hoops is versus the NBA? Here's one I noticed - you watch a NCAA game this past year & you're guaranteed to see multiple illegal pick calls. There is no such thing in the NBA as an illegal pick if you're watching the playoffs - every team does it & it's never called, like travelling....89Hen wrote:I can't stand basketball. Around the midwest we can't get one called. It drives me nuts.

NCAA is seeing record fouls called
http://mattsstatsblog.com/?p=453
Last year the average NCAA team committed 18.2 fouls per game. Through the month of November 2015, D1 teams have committed 20.2 fouls per game. Is this increase that big of a deal? After all it’s just 2 more fouls per game. Really it’s only one more foul per half. A mere 10% increase. Small potatoes, right? Let’s look at this another way.
The last time NCAA D1 teams averaged 20.2 fouls per game was the 1980 season! As you can see in the graph above there has been a general downward trend in average fouls per game throughout the past three and a half decades. This year’s new rules may erase all that.
Yes I realize it is early and our sample size is small. Perhaps refs will cool their whistles as the season progresses. Maybe teams will learn how to play better within the new rules. In all likelihood a combination of both will reduce the average fouls per game.
***Data viz note***
I decided to truncate the Y Axis to highlight the change over time. I don’t think this is disingenuously representing the data because it is contextually relevant. Keep this in mind – the 2012 season (17.68 fouls per game) represents an NCAA all time low as far back as data is available (which is 1948). The point is, in just 3 years the NCAA has gone from an all time low to what is currently a 35 year high.
