Heres something that helps to put religion into better perspective.
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

  • Waterboarding is torture
  • Torture is wrong, except when the intended recipient is a large type asshole
  • Hitler is apparently more relevant to a discussion about waterboarding terrorists than one might have imagined
  • Hitler was both an asshole and a fan of the writings of Nietzsche
  • Therefore Nietzsche was an asshole
  • If only he hadn't died 109 years ago, it would be acceptable to torture Nietzsche
Uh, not really Bench.

Most serious scholars believe that Hitler personally was fundamentally unfamiliar with N's writings. Look no further than his not being mentioned or even referenced in Mein Kampf as evidence. His later reverence for N was a Nazi propaganda production initiated by N's sister and her husband - both passionate aryan racists and nazi benefactors. It's is a fact that N's sister manipulated his writings for profit and to further her racist and Wagnerian nationalist agendas. See N's Will to Power as an example.

The primary tenents of national socialism have little or nothing to do with N's philosophy. They serve neither as inspiration or source material for anything Hitler said or did. Hitler never quoted N or made reference to his writings, as he did to numerous others, most notably Wagner, Shopenaur and Jesus Christ. The source material for Hitler? Easy:

German Nationalism - Wagner and the plethora of hack social darwinists and aryan racist authors
Anti Semitism - The catholic and protestant churches, Martin Luther
Power and Government - Christian and catholic church dogma, a german christian populace prone to unconditionally believing in anything they are told and succeptable to dogmas claiming the ultimate truth and headed by a charasmatic "messiah" figure.

Nietzsche was not an asshole. Thanks to the tireless and brilliant translation work of Kaufman, popular interest in existentialism and study of N's writings, we're seeing N in a much different light. He has his bad stuff, but there is much that is admirable too.
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

I was actually making fun of someone else's logic with the bolded bit in my post, and it was a pretty good setup for the punchline. But since you put a lot of effort into this, I'll take your measure of Nietzsche under advisement.

Hey bench, if it's any consolation, I got the joke and thought it was pretty funny.

And I'm all for torturing Nietzsche, and any Nietzsche revisionist too just for good measure.

You are becoming bad self-parody. :ugeek:

Psst - Here's a hint. Look in the thread.

Psst -- Also see where I said Nietzsche would have been appalled by the way his ideas were appropriated by the Third Reich. Nonetheless, Nietzsche's ideas are ripe for misuse because his writings lack of clear or rigorous philosophical perspective.
