Ok. You could pick any year in that time frame and if you look at the actual data there is no case to be made for the idea that things were better for the "typical" person in the United States then. I'll use home ownership but I can also tell you that you'll see the same kind of thing if you look at things like inflation adjusted income, unemployment, percentage of the population with college degrees, etc. So to home ownership rate since I think that's an indication of successfully pursuing the American dream:



Yes there were peaks during the 1970s and 2000s but there is no indication at all that things have been "worse" recently vs. the 1960s and 1970s. And that's even though the graph creates the impression that things have been more variable than they have because it chops off the scale at 60%. You can get a better feel for how things have varied by setting the bottom of the scale at 0:



When you see it in perspective like that you see that it's been close to constant. A little bit of random variation. And the houses people own now are bigger. You can see that at https://www.census.gov/const/C25Ann/sft ... vgsqft.pdf. That table only goes back to 1973 and ends at 2010 but you can see the trend.
