Couple that with maybe the country being banned from the upcoming Olympics anyway because of extensive national team doping over the past few years, and maybe these professional hooligans might just say "aw, what the heck" and go out in style and beat the crap out of some people, penalties be damned.

Croatian fans showing up the Russians.

Lobbing flares and bombs onto pitch up 2-1 against the Czech Republic in the final minutes of the game.

One blew up in a steward's face....

After long delay... game restarts and the Czech Republic equalizes on a 90'+5 penalty.

And it's basically Croatian fans fighting themselves. Apparently a lot of infighting in the Croatian fanbase regarding where the team plays. You can't make this stuff up.

The Italians had already won the group going into the game having beaten Belgium (#2 in the World) and #35 Sweden so they played their B team against Ireland. They completely rested 8 of the 11 starters for this game (compared to who started the Belgium game) and subbed in for 30 minutes 1 of the guys who started the Belgium game.

Essentially 3 1/3 of Italy's A team played against Ireland and they only lost by 1.

Agreed, Italy was already through and they couldn't do anything to change their position as group winner. Game was meaningless to the Italians, who now get to play Spain (who I think they match up well against - Spain hates good defensive teams).

With that said, I like when the Irish win. :thumb:

This is why the USA will never be good at soccer.

On the other hand...if we took the top 20 NBA players and had them audition for the World Cup...we might see some of the best flopping the Earth has ever seen..

Think that both teams need to learn how to take penalty kicks before their next game. Way too many bad shots there.

Agreed, but Zaza's was by far the worst. Just absolute WTF were you thinking tier.

And of course the funniest part was Conte scrambling to sub him in just so he could take a penalty.

Agreed. I was rooting for him to miss because of that.

Ref should not have allowed him to sub in and should have given a yellow card to the player who went down while they stalled on the throw-in.

Nah, home teams tend to win in the Euros, I think the French are in great shape. Portugal had an easy side of the bracket and why they got this far. Ronaldo's awesome, but I don't think he'll be enough.

Yeah, my bad, I heard the stat wrong on my way out today. With that said, it'll be 1984, with a victory over an Iberian peninsula team, all over again for the Frenchies.
