NC Voter ID Law Overturned
Could not see this happening, at least the ID part. Some of the other provisions seemed overboard though.

I was laughing about earlier today...
I'm just praying Donald Trump has something to say about this (PLEASE)
I was actually getting excited to hear his assessment
I'm fairly itching with anticipation

I don't know what's worse
The left suggesting that minorities are too dumb to go get an ID
or the minorities that let the left get away with being so goddamn patronizing

But lets reserve our judgement until the voice of the Republican party speaks on this topic

Bad law, because it was too widespread in scope . The Fun Bunch at its best!

And, I'm not sure this affects solely minorities.
It greatly affects poor people and especially the rural poor.
Over 200,000 North Carolinians don't have an acceptable ID.
People who registered more than 90 days before the election must have a North Carolina issued ID. Student ID's don't count. Out-of-state students get screwed. Wonder how they tend to vote?
I'm not sold that it is strictly "racist." And, I'd be fine with these laws if they registered EVERYONE eligible to vote and sent them a valid ID. But, I don't think there would be much interest in that.
The 5th circuit (decidedly conservative) overturned Texas's voter ID law already. Just a matter of time before SCOTUS rules on it.

Re: NC Voter ID Law Overturned
That's a lot of word salad but I believe you did hit all the talking points. First of all, the arguments against voter ID laws almost ALWAYS hit on the topic of how minorities are disproportionately affected by these laws, complete with a bunch of mental gymnastics as to why blacks and hispanics don't get ID- but after all the tap dancing it boils down to just more leftist patronizing of minorities.Skjellyfetti wrote:No one is suggesting that minorities are too dumb to get an ID.CID1990 wrote:I don't know what's worse

Out of state students can get an absentee ballot and vote in their own states- just like I did when I was in college and gazillions of other students do every year. jeez cry me a river over this one. Watauga County doesn't want shitheads from Maryland voting in the local elections and with damn good reason
As for the decision- the court didn't rule based on the difficulty of getting an ID. The decision specifically said that the law was racially motivated
I issue US passports every day to people with difficulties getting civil documents- and that's an actual citizenship document. The excuses as to why so many people don't have ID is complete BS.
I'd be all for registering everyone and issuing a voter ID as well- if that happens watch the usual suspects object along the same lines

What Jelly meant to say is that there are at least 200,000 dead people in NC who therefore cannot get ID which would preclude them from votingCAA Flagship wrote:200,000? How hard is it to get? Don't any of these people drive? What is the problem here?Skjellyfetti wrote:

Re: NC Voter ID Law Overturned
One thing that always gets me is how the same people who are all for all sorts of checks and verifications on people who want to buy guns when the right to keep and bear arms is in the Bill of Rights think it's horrible to require relatively mild checks and verifications on people who want to vote...which is a right not nearly so emphasized in the Constitution as the right to keep and bear arms is.
But it's OK for this cycle if it reduces the chances of Trump becoming President.

Out of state students have just as much right to vote as anyone else. Otherwise they could just make a law that out-of-state students are not allowed to vote.CID1990 wrote:Watauga County doesn't want shitheads from Maryland voting in the local elections and with damn good reason
But, you do admit here that they are choosing populations that they would rather not vote and making it more difficult for them to do so.

Well, not Bubba and Jim Bob with Trump stickers on their TRUCK... because if they have a truck... there's a good chance they have a driver's license.Pwns wrote:You mean Bubba and Jim Bob with Trump stickers on their trucks?Skjellyfetti wrote: It greatly affects poor people and especially the rural poor. .
But, yes. It does affect rural poor white people without driver's licenses just as much as poor rural black folk without drivers licenses. I already said I didn't see it as a strict race issue.

Why don't all these states just copy Georgia's voter ID law?
It's already been through the legal system and passed all the tests.

For the same reason they pay more tuition because they are not from North Carolina- I suppose that's unfair too, eh?

Re: NC Voter ID Law Overturned
The student voting issue in Watauga County was settled with a court case in the mid-1980's if I recall correctly. The Board of Elections wasn't allowing students not from the county, not just those from out of state, to register prior to a vote on alcohol sales. The eventual result of the court case and referendum led to beer and wine sales on and off premises in Boone, and the ABC store being established. Liquor by the drink came relatively recently.
Before that, you had go to Blowing Rock.

Re: NC Voter ID Law Overturned
That's been my issue with this. To buy cigarettes, alcohol, medicine, cash a check, enter certain buildings, rent an apartment, get a job, etc....you need some form of valid ID, usually a state issued ID. If you already have that, then how difficult is it to use that or modify it to show you're a registered voter? There's plenty of room to have a "V" somewhere to indicate registration.CAA Flagship wrote:200,000? How hard is it to get? Don't any of these people drive? It's not a difficult thing to implement. We don't need another card. Alter what's already in place and hold registration drives. Guess what, most DLs have barcodes. You can easily alter a digital file to verify a registration.

No. They are out of state for a reason become a resident and the vote in that state. What's to stop me from voting in NC even though I live 9 miles across the border in SC but spend most of my time in NC? Residents vote for their state. Non residents have no say.Skjellyfetti wrote:Out of state students have just as much right to vote as anyone else. 200,000 is what...10% of the adult population? What percentage of these folks actually vote anyway?Ibanez wrote:That's been my issue with this. Perhaps NC should base it on the number of teeth?

So do you think the right to keep and bear arms is more important than the right to vote?
