1998 was because his kicker, who hadn't missed a kick all year, missed in the NFC title game...not because of his coaching.
2000 was a blow out in the NFC title game, but people don't realize the job he did to even get there. They were the 2 seed in the playoffs. That team started Wasswa Serwanga at corner for the NFC title game due to injuries. Guys like Fernando Smith and Tony Williams saw significant PT on defense. The WR that were playing that day? Andrew Jordan, John Davis, Johnny McWilliams, Matthew Hatcheete and Chris Walsh....to go along with Moss and Carter.
The fact the Vikings were even in that position that year is pretty damn crazy when you look at it.
2001 was his only losing season. Listening to people connected to the franchise it sounds like Korey Stringers death during that training camp really hit Denny Green and he never recovered from it. He refused to talk about it, but from all accounts it really, really, hit him hard.
He was 101-70 as Vikings coach. Outside of Bud Grant, there is no question he's the best the Vikings ever had. He is the reason that kids my age in northern Iowa, eastern SD, eastern ND and the area bleed Vikings over other NFL teams, or other sports.
Outside of the area he'll always be the "They are who we thought they were" guy. That's not how MN sports fans will remember him. I'll never forget asking for his autograph on a pennet at training camp in 1993 or 94 and him taking a minute or two to actually get down on my level and talk with me. He could have done whatever one else did - half scribble on it and walk away - but the man was pure class. I ended up getting a picture with him too. He's why I had a starter jacket of the Vikings.
Look at his coaching tree: Tony Dungy, Mike Tomlin, Brian Billick in Minnesota. Tyrone Willingham at Stanford. David Shaw (current Stanford coach) got going under Denny.
Hate him for whatever reason you want, I guess. I'll remember him my own way.
Feel free to remember him that way, but you had the wool pulled over your eyes.
Dennis Green is who most people thought he was.
10-45 at Northwestern.
16-18 at Stanford.
26-63 as a college coach.
How the fvck did he get hired as an NFL head coach?
97-62 during the regular season with MN. LOADS of talent...only to come up short.
4-8 in the post season.
5-10 in his last season with the Vikings.
16-34 with Arizona.
8-11 in the UFL.
In the end, he was a clown who only won his traditionally weak division 4 times in 10 years.
He had no balls in 1998. Bad coaching. Dennis the Eunich.
Only 9 winning seasons out of 24 as a head coach.
Dennis Green was exactly what his record says he was...a bad coach.
