...on Tuesday the water in the pool where the divers for the women's synchronized 10-meter platform competed -- officially called a diving well -- was dark green. The water had been blue Monday and there was no explanation as to why the water had turned color. But it was safe, organizers said. "The water quality at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre was tested and there were no risks for the athletes. We are investigating the cause," the committee said. The adjacent pool at the aquatics center, where water polo is being contested, looked normal.

Phelps actually replaced another Marylander on the relay.
Baltimore (as well as DC) is a swimming hotbed. There's a girl in my office who knows Phelps and his sisters and several of the other swimmers. She is a near-elite level swimmer herself, complete with the frizzy chlorine hair and gigantic shoulders.

So my son asked me about the relay team members that qualified for the final (swam in the semis) but did not participate in the final. Do they get a medal too? Shit. I don't know if they get any credit at all. Anyone know?

I believe everyone associated with the relay (i.e. anyone who swam in any of the lead up races) gets a medal. I think that's the case in track as well where the better runners don't run until the finals.
CAA Flagship wrote:Oh, regarding the swimming events, NBC fails in that they do not show what the race is during the race (400m fly, 400m medley, etc). So if you are at a bar where it is difficult to hear the broadcast, you see them swimming but have no idea what the event is once it starts. Also, there is no way of knowing how much farther they have to go to the end if you start watching after the start. Totally reliant on the broadcasters.
Did anyone else notice that NBC began displaying the race info at the bottom of the screen last night? It's about time. Now all they need is some sort of gauge so we know how far the race has progressed, similar to a video clip.

My understanding is they do get medals. I actually know the father of the kid Phelps replaced, have played golf with him several times.

My 15 year old noticed after she got stuck watching a 1500 race. "They just wouldn't stop swimming!"
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."
