During the past 10 drafts, Phillies first-round picks have produced a total of 4.4 Wins Above Replacement, the fewest in the major leagues in that span (next closest is the Rockies with 5.6 WAR).

The other time the Phillies had the No. 1 pick, in 1998, they selected Pat Burrell, a third baseman from Miami. Burrell played his first nine seasons with the Phillies and finished his 12-year career with 18.8 WAR.

Since 2008, eight of the Phillies’ nine first-round picks have been high school players. None have reached the big leagues.
When beside never did the Natinals/Expos franchise ever win a World Series?

BOOM!
That '94 Expos team had a great chance to win the World Series when the strike happened. 74-40 when the season stopped (on pace for 105 wins) - 6 games ahead of the Braves for best record in the NL with Yankees going 70-43 to lead the AL. Unfortunately, they lost a ton of players due to free agency including Larry Walker, Marquis Grissom, Ken Hill and Jeff Wetteland (closer). Because of their financial situation, never recovered finishing 66-78 in 1995 when they finally started playing again.

Most of the other starters including Pedro Martinez, Cliff Floyd, Moises Alou and Will Cordero left in the next 3 years. They were a great farm team for organizations that wanted to spend some money.

Well, on the bright side, they've gotten better in the most recent years. Biddle got injured and never panned out, JP Crawford might be the best prospect anywhere in the minors right now, and Aaron Nola is already in the majors and looks to be the real thing. Odd that they picked Randolph in '15, maybe he'll play somewhere other than SS since Crawford should be the man there for years to come.

It is odd, though, that they went with high school kids so often, and the only college guy they went with made the majors in 1 year. I understand wanting to be able to sign these kids and maximizing the money to sign all your picks, but at some point picking volume over picking quality starts to be a misguided venture.

Facing the Nationals and Cubs for two weeks straight would be rough on any team, but for the Phillies it was downright brutal. Against those two teams, the Phillies went 1-11, scoring more than four runs only once while giving up more than four runs in every game except in the single contest they won.

Nobody said it will be easy. That said, this team is far more interesting and watchable than last year's. Lots of potential here with the youngsters. I think they'll end up with about 70-72 wins.

Not any more! Won 6 out of the last 7! :thumb:

I predicted these guys would end up with about 70 wins this year. That seems about right, and they're more fun to watch than last year's team.

What happened to Nola? :ohno:

Ruiz caught four no-hitters (tied for MLB record with Jason Varitek) as a Phillie, to include:

Roy Halladay perfect game, May 29, 2010
Roy Halladay no-hitter, Oct 6, 2010, only the second no-hitter in MLB postseason history
Combined no-hitter (Hamels, Diekman, Giles, Papelbon), Sep 1, 2014
First no-hitter at Wrigley Field in 50 years (Hamels), Jul 25, 2015

You'll need GF for that. It doesn't register with me either. Something about clearing waivers I think?

I think they just need to rename it. To have trades after a "trade deadline" is just :dunce:

By the way, five years ago, if you had asked who the last member of the 2008 squad to be signed to huge money and kept through at least 2016 was....

...I mean everyone's answer would have been Ryan Howard, amirite?

Nothing hard about it at all - loads of players are floated on what are called retractable waivers in August. When a player is put on waivers, every team gets a chance to claim that person and the team with the lowest winning percentage of those who did claim him get to "get" him. However, the team the player currently plays on, after seeing which teams claimed him or, conversely, no team claim him, can always retract the waivers and just keep the player. So in Ruiz's case, the Phils put him on waivers, no one in front of the Dodgers (that is, no one with a worse record than the Dodgers) wanted him, and the same was the case with the players that the Dodgers sent to the Phillies (although since the Phillies have a poorer record there were less teams to have to clear waivers before the Phillies could claim them), so the teams could make the trade. Simple. :thumb:

RIP to the 2008 World Fucking Champions. Damn, this article actually got to me a little. Worth a full read.
The last receding wave of the longest ebbing tide will slip into the cold depths of history on Sunday when Ryan Howard walks off the field at Citizens Bank Park for the final time as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies...
