We are still there because a war without the nation building follow up is politically untenable

personally, I find that leaving a country in its own rubble after we decapitate it is an acceptable part of the deterrent package but nobody asks me

Why was there a war?
Why did Obama get us into Libya and Syria now?

Don't be stupid. I was talking about the fact that we feel it is necessary to build **** after we blow it up. The reason we are there is immaterial to that.

Try to keep up

You're saying that the reason we're there now is to rebuild shit and you're calling me stupid? :silly:
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

Congrats

You have sourced that

A. Afghanistan has a lot of minerals and

B. There are American companies that would like to mine them

I am not disputing any of that

Get back to me when the drills start drilling and the trucks start rolling and THEN maybe the argument that we are only in Afghanistan for the minerals might move out of Spandos/Clitz/HD territory

Our military cant control 1% of that shithole. The place needs to come out of the stone age before anyone can think of mining it in a cost effective way - and when that happens the Chinese will control it. Quite frankly any mining interests in America that are entertaining thoughts of pulling mineral wealth out of there any time within the next 50 years need to also be checked for belief in unicorns

Any corporate interests would get blown to hell within a week's time, plus the sources of these well endowed minerals are public knowledge, which makes them bullseye targets to insurgents and terrorist groups. The property insurance rates ALONE would drive any medium size corp out of business.

I don't think we're talking medium size here. We're talking big boy corporations, with the world's largest military to do their killing for them.

Yep. That, AND whoever pulls out owns the mess politically because of the blood and treasure we have already expended.

You and clitz being all Spandos on this is cute, but you are ignoring political realities in favor of the assumption that we play the long game for ANYTHING in this country.

It's been fourteen years since the opening goat fvck at Kandahar, that's a pretty long game for us.

I am not sure why everyone seems to be belittling our rebuilding efforts overseas.

That shit costs money. More than $4 BILLION as of 2014.

There are MANY contractors that would love to get the contracts to rebuild roads and infrastructure overseas. So, who gets the sweet deals...and when is the last protest we heard about them? :suspicious:

Recall the recent past:

"Current criticism over Halliburton's lucrative Iraq contracts has some historians drawing parallels to a similar controversy involving the company during Lyndon B. Johnson's administration.

Nearly 40 years ago, Halliburton faced almost identical charges over its work for the U.S. government in Vietnam — allegations of overcharging, sweetheart contracts from the White House and war profiteering."

War profiteering. Bush, Bush, Bush/Cheney, Cheney, Cheney.

Guess the Fearless voice of the American Left is sleeping these days.

When one finds an article about this stuff, Obama/Hillary seems to be left out.

Of course, the State Department is mentioned. 8-)

"For over a decade, the State Department gave 69% of its funding for Afghanistan to a single company—a company with a particularly checkered history.

DynCorp, one of the largest corporations working in the government’s army of private contractors, has long been known for corruption scandals and a questionable performance record. But none of that seems to have discouraged the U.S. government from awarding the company new contracts.

The State Department paid nearly $4 billion for projects to aid in Afghan reconstruction from 2002 to 2013. $2.5 billion of that went to DynCorp—69% of all the money awarded by the State Department over almost the entire duration of the war.

It might raise alarms that so much of the State Department’s budget was funneled directly into one entity. But DynCorp—which is owned by Cerberus Capital Management LP, a private equity firm based in New York—is used to relying on federal cash. With more than 96% of the company’s $3 billion in revenue coming from government contracts, DynCorp is basically a private subsidiary of Uncle Sam."

Yeah, we stay and rebuild countries after we bomb them...and our reasons for staying aren't all that noble.
