Infuriating. As one with a long knowledge of CSU football...I've often said one of the football teams toughest opponents are some of the folks "across the road" in the administration who WANTED football back in 1989 to boost enrollment but never really wanted football to be good. (Hence the stadium fiasco).
Now....we have one of the most sought after coaches in FCS. We're a legit top 15 team. And have a 4 game win streak against our much more established in-town neighbor The Citadel.
And the schools puppet string pullers are now actively trying to anger Chadwell and run him off. He COULD HAVE left last year and stayed. Now this.
Many times in the past some people would wonder why CSU didn't win more because "they have some great athletes". Well....we've often had 2 opponents per week. I recall the FIRST TIME we ever played The Citadel in 2002. Sky high excitement. The Wednesday prior....the school and security suspend multiple starteds. WHY? They sent student to a football party the week before and saw them with red plastic cups that COULD have had alcohol (no proof).
Things like that have happened for decades. The AD supports athletics obviously.
But man there's some people there who DO NOT want a top 25 football team.

Seriously? What's going on up that at Baptist college?the school suspended a bunch of Chadwell’s players for relatively minor bookstore violations that have been going on for years.

In short.....like typical "old CSU admin" fashion...they found some petty things on the football team that any other school in America other than military schools would see as worthy of a finger wag and verbal warning. And the school blew it up to SMU circa 1980s status.Ibanez wrote:Seriously? Happens every 4 or 5 years there. The admin isn't thrilled about football being popular and successful. In the past these types of things just haven't been as publicized because they usually hurt the team just before they got good.

Believe it or not this is being stirred up by the new compliance officer. She is trying like hell to make a name for herself right out of the gate and has no idea the consequences of what she is doing. This is what is causing the AD and other upper management to freak out over something NOBODY has ever been punished for.

Let me put it this way, you are about to see several employees of the book store given their pink slip. There is the real culprit. Had the same thing happen to me when I was going there on Chapter 31 benefits. Guy in the book store tells me, hey you don't get any of the money back, might as well use it. Only difference was I was not a scholarship athlete.

Easy. Enrollment. Tbey only started football at the same time they changed from "Baptist College" to CSU because it was part of a larger plan to boost enrollment bc they were struggling with finances.Ibanez wrote:Why? Why even have a football team?bucs90 wrote:

They want football to help with the schools enrollment and free advertising just by having the schools name out there. But they have NEVER wanted the team to get good because IN THEIR OPINION to have a good team you need guys who behave badly and party and drink.
Wish I was making this up. I'm not.

This compliance officer had a serious grudge or agenda and....well....the administration is happily going along with it.

WOW....standout WR Colton Korn...brother of one of the coaches Willie Korn....spoke out on twitter saying CSU treats the athletes like 2nd class students compared to other normal students.

HE'S RIGHT. I'm a former player and there are 2 different world's there. The athletics dept and the others. At least in the eyes of the administration.
Ever wonder why there isn't a CSU fan forum? Former players have almost no allegiance to anything other than their former teammates. School security targets football and basketball players. Always have.
Ever wonder why the school refuses to put any serious effort into a stadium? And the basketball team...has it even worse. Big churches have better hoops gyms.
I'm sad to see that at the peak of CSU footballs history....the school decides to self inflict this terrible wound. Chadwell and his staff are as good as gone. He would leave anyway for a better job. But NOW we won't even be able to lure someone as good to replace him.

Also the NCAA has not suspended anyone as that article says. The school did it out of caution as not to play a player that was later found to be ineligible.

The suspensions stuck out the most to me. I can't imagine the NCAA insisting on a suspension for these very minor infractions as long as they were reported properly.CSUBUCDAD wrote:Also the NCAA has not suspended anyone as that article says. Re: Charleston Southern administration is trying to run off Coach Chadwell; OLD CSU politics
The Post and Courier did an FOIA request on USC and Clemson documents relating to this level offense (Level III) and it nearly NEVER results in a suspension.Mvemjsunpx wrote:The suspensions stuck out the most to me. CSU has a LONG HISTORY of the admin making decisions that intentionally harm football and basketball when not only would other schools not do it, but CSU wouldn't even do it to their own non athlete students.
I try to not bring this up bc it hurts recruiting. But put the puzzle together. No investment at all in football or basketball facilities. Almost non existent presence of CSU fans and former players online. There are no CSU specific message boards because so many of them leave there with a grudge and just follow FBS teams later in life.
I could list dozens of other moves like this over the past 20 years. ONLY reason this became big is CSU is winning so others pay attention and because of social media.
They just gave the equivalent of 2 months in jail for driving 46 in a 45 zone.

Couple of thoughts:
1. Not sure CSU is a top 15 team, yes, they are much better than they have been and should be ranked. We will know how good they are in a few weeks.
2. If the AD/Admin let a compliance officer, make these decisions, then they all should be fired. The compliance officer just provides information, the Admin makes the decisions what to do with the information.
3. If a football player/athlete listens to a Barnes and Noble employee as an authority on the subject, they have more problems than just buying electronics.
4. I am willing to bet there is a lot more to this situation than has been revealed so far.
5. I am certain that you are correct about Chadwell being gone after this year. He is a good coach, just not much class.

I didn't know it was a Baptist school. Odd that they chose some bacon loving, rum swilling, pirates as their mascot.Ibanez wrote:Seriously? At least the suspensions are against FSU.
Re: Charleston Southern administration is trying to run off Coach Chadwell; OLD CSU politics
Yep it is. It really doesn't seem like it on campus at times. About 5% I'd say of the students are hardcore religious. I'm a Christian so I'm not knocking that one bit. The rest of us were just normal college kids. Only big thing was no alcohol and no women in the men's dorms and vice versa. Definitely not that strict on campus.kalm wrote:I didn't know it was a Baptist school. Odd that they chose some bacon loving, rum swilling, pirates as their mascot.Ibanez wrote:

BUT it was different if you were a football and basketball player. That hardcore group of old school admin were dead set on targeting them for extra scrutiny. Sounds like a bad movie script. But man...its true. The two teams have long had team houses off campus like a fraternity would where we'd go have some fun.
And of course....the #1 recruiting draw....just go downtown or to the beach. We used to joke that we were the unofficial football team of the College of Charleston (they don't have football which is a crime itself). We spend more time downtown with their coeds than we did with our own haha (and yes....The Citadel guys hated us. They had curfew. Their C of C gals and us didnt!!! C of C gals would have dinner with a cadet.....then party after midnight with the Bucs!!!)

Well, here is what I know that is impacting their decisions. The major one being they have a very low endowment. A HUUUGGGEEE chunk of it was stolen a few years back: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/04/09/parish
This alone drives all kinds of decisions. Building stadiums and basketball arenas takes major cash outlays. Kids on scholy using hard to obtain scholy money for things they are not allowed to purchase with said money under NCAA rules might not result in suspensions at Clem$on, but a cash strapped program like CSUs it's a different story. They are sending a message.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

I tend to bring up Econo-man in these conversations. CSU got what it deserved. Any research into the mans credentials would have raised an alarm.BullDog85 wrote:Well, here is what I know that is impacting their decisions. The major one being they have a very low endowment.
