WV cop fired for NOT shooting suspect with unloaded handgun:

Post by Skjellyfetti »

:? :ohno:

Fired for handling this exactly the way cops should handle situations like this, imo.
Weirton terminates officer who did not fire at man with gun

Ronald D. Williams Jr., shot and killed by a Weirton police officer May 6 after a domestic dispute. He is shown here earlier in 2016 with his now 5-month-old son.
By Sean D. Hamill / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

After responding to a report of a domestic incident on May 6 in Weirton, W.Va., then-Weirton police officer Stephen Mader found himself confronting an armed man.

Immediately, the training he had undergone as a Marine to look at “the whole person” in deciding if someone was a terrorist, as well as his situational police academy training, kicked in and he did not shoot.

“I saw then he had a gun, but it was not pointed at me,” Mr. Mader recalled, noting the silver handgun was in the man’s right hand, hanging at his side and pointed at the ground.

The man was Ronald D. “R.J.” Williams Jr., 23, of Pittsburgh, and what happened in the seconds after Mr. Mader’s initial decision is still being investigated by Mr. Williams’ family as well as the West Virginia Civil Liberties Union.

Mr. Mader, who was standing behind Mr. Williams’ car parked on the street, said he then “began to use my calm voice.”

“I told him, ‘Put down the gun,’ and he’s like, ‘Just shoot me.’ And I told him, ‘I’m not going to shoot you brother.’ Then he starts flicking his wrist to get me to react to it.

“I thought I was going to be able to talk to him and deescalate it. I knew it was a suicide-by-cop” situation.
Mr. Mader — speaking publicly about this case for the first time — said that when he tried to return to work on May 17, following normal protocol for taking time off after an officer-involved shooting, he was told to go see Weirton Police Chief Rob Alexander.

In a meeting with the chief and City Manager Travis Blosser, Mr. Mader said Chief Alexander told him: “We’re putting you on administrative leave and we’re going to do an investigation to see if you are going to be an officer here. You put two other officers in danger.”

Mr. Mader said that “right then I said to him: ‘Look, I didn’t shoot him because he said, ‘Just shoot me.’ ”

On June 7, a Weirton officer delivered him a notice of termination letter dated June 6, which said by not shooting Mr. Williams he “failed to eliminate a threat.”

20/20 is not how the world works. If the gun was loaded, a police officer, or a bystander, could have been killed. <-----FACT. The police officer didn't know the gun wasn't loaded, so he GUESSED that the perp wasn't going to hurt anyone else.

Want more? The dumbass has attacked his girlfriend the week before, but that dumbass (yes, dumbasses seem to pair up often, don't they) decided to not press charges.

He had physically attacked her...ain't love grand?

So, he then goes for round two where he threatens to kill her again, and then, as the argument escalated, the dumbass said he wanted to get himself killed by police. Of course, the dumbass girlfriend didn't bother to tell that little detail to police.

So, you have a loser who was already reported to have threatened someone's life, and a second call comes in with a second physical altercation with his meat warmer, and he was acting strangely with a gun out in public.

Shoot the dumb fvck before he has the opportunity to endanger anyone but himself.

Oh, what the article didn't bother pointing out is that the dumbass was shot because he eventually raised his gun towards the police officers.

So, with 20/20 hindsight, you and jellybean are trying to make this officer into a victim because he GUESSED that the dumbass, who had already physically attacked his girlfriend twice, and threatened to kill her, wasn't going to hurt someone.

WHAT IF THAT GUESS WAS WRONG?

What if the gnu was loaded and the dumbass got a shot off and killed someone? What if he shot your mother? You'd be on here saying the first officer caused your mother's death because he was soft.

Oh, and the police officer was a dumbass...didn't take the resignation and got fired. Stubborn. Had two other incidents on his record. Dumbass doesn't shoot dumbass...and the dumbass girlfriend will end up dating another dumbass and probablyt have little dumbasses running around on welfare, with dumbasses like you playing the role of the liberal dumbass arm chair QB. :dunce:

Well, he did accomplish one thing: probably saved Pittsburgh from several weeks of riots.

This cop confronted a guy who wasn't aiming a weapon at him and tried to talk him down. Just like he was trained to do. Would you want the cops to show up at your house and just start blasting away? :dunce: :dunce:

I've got a great idea. Why don't we all pretend to know exactly what happened here and make a judgement based on one story in a newspaper that actually used the headline...

The guy probably had a .410 and the cop knew he wasn't a threat in any way.
