A decade with Jeff Fisher...

Post by Chizzang »

What do head coaches do exactly..?
How can we as fans of a sport evaluate the performance of a head coach..? (over time)

Coaches:
at the day to day player level

+ Evaluate talent
+ Draft talent
+ Develop talent
+ Work positively with the different personalities they have assembled

Coaches:
At the Organization level

+ Develop an organizational wide Football System
+ Create a Team Identity through that system
+ Develop Coaching staff through system

Indeed,
I am muttering in the corner over this clown

He drafts poorly on the offensive side of the ball
He develops talent poorly
His system is hap hazard or in some areas nonexistent
His staff is a revolving door

I was thinking I agreed with your 15-20% assessment...and then I saw the Rams play. There's no way they're only 20% worse than the best team in the NFL.

Not really. Bradford was not a bad pick. He just couldn't stay healthy. Austin and Gurley were good picks.
He just can't coach offense. Or can't find an OC who can.

This ^ is kinda like the "There's no such thing as" climate change... it was 72 degrees today"

But over a 16 game season
These things work themselves out
and as far as Pure Talent Evaluation the Rams have plenty of talent

I don't disagree with ^ that
But to call him inconsistent in the draft - would be a compliment

And wouldn't you say that "offense" is a HUGE part of the NFL
So you're kind of making my point for me (Thank you)

Didn't he have two broken knees at Oklahoma before he got drafted? I seem to recall people questioning why anyone would take him so high considering the obviously high chance of injury...(their point proven since then)

It isn't exactly a one-game sample. Nothing has changed since last season except location. The personnel are largely the same.

Hardly ^

They lost Jenkins their no. 2 corner (to a HUGE contract)
They lost 1 starting defensive linemen
and 1 starting defensive end
They lost 1 starting linebacker

all signed by other teams

They have a new quarterback
and a new starting tight end
a new left tackle
and new right guard

They already have a great offensive mind on the staff. Of course, he's not actually coaching offense. He's coaching special teams....

But the Rams have a rookie QB that wont be in the league in 2 years............that has to count for something.

How they didnt pick Wentz is beyond anyone in the NFL

The Seahawks were 2 and 2 last season...
They tend to start very slow

They also had an OL last season...so there's that. Heard on the radio this morning that Seattle pays the lowest of their salary cap to the OL...and is a whopping 51% less than the next closest team.

That Jimmy Graham trade is still hurting them.

Agreed,

The Jimmy Graham trade was absolutely terrible - at best he's a large slow wide out with above average hands
and at his worst he's a BAD blocking undisciplined tight end with below average rout skills

I like this topic...
How long can Chuck Pagano last at Indy? It seems like the excuse with that team is "He's got a great QB, but no defense and no running back and Chuck had cancer". Yeah well, it's been 4 years since he had cancer (did you know? Not sure if that's ever been mentioned before) and his defense has gotten worse every year...he hasn't had a running back break 100 yards in something like 51 games (I believe I heard that stat on Sunday? Correct me if I'm wrong). I get that coaches inherit bad teams. But his team is well beyond the point of inheritance.

I was just talking with my brother about this...
Why Luck would sign his life away to the COLTS drug addled owner and mediocre coach is amazing
Were I Andrew Luck (and I'm not) I would have played out my contract and had the pick of the litter

Teams that would have sold their soul for Luck on the open market

Denver
Dallas
Dolphins
Bills
Rams
Redskins

and probably more
