That area is well known for the occasional party by young people, usually at the beginning of the year and the end of the year, and it isn't out of the ordinary for people get arrested for alcohol related issues along that street.

I am all for letting kids get their fun on, as long as the party doesn't get out of control. +200 people on that little lot is waaaay over the top, so the occupants/renters should be held accountable for their stupidity. A former city councilman lives a block away, and that block is actually a nice residential area. Everyone knows this...and if they don't, then they are dumb as a rock. Small parties will get ignored as long as the partiers aren't trashing the neighborhood. As soon as things get stupid (people pissing on other's lawns, screaming and cursing at the top of their lungs, tossing trash all over the neighborhood, etc.), the neighbors will, appropriately, call the police.

As for running when the police come knocking...yeah, that property has a tall fence around it, so most of the kids were trapped in the yard and probably too drunk to hop the fence. There were a LOT of police involved in that operation, and they surrounded the property and said hello to the few that did try. That party was going on and out of control for quite some time to allow for that many police departments to get involved.

And, running away isn't as effective as it used to be. The Newark police film everything and then cross reference the videos with UD. A citation for underage drinking will buy you some trouble, but resisting arrest or fleeing will compound the issues and risk your education.

A friend of mine is a defense lawyer in Newark, and he's already gotten several phone calls from parents. He'll be making a good chunk of change in the upcoming months.

The kicker to me is a personal story - the cop quoted all over the story & interviewed in the video lived next door to me in Christiana Towers & was a good friend of mine, we drank together frequently, underage too I may add. He played freshman football for the Hens too. I don't know exactly what lawyers are going to be able to do about underage drinking charges. They breathlyzed everyone there - underage kids that registered anything noticeable got ticketed - pretty cut & dry.

Here's the sense that lawyers make: a friend of mine had two underage (not college) kids arrested for the same thing, they actually spent the night in custody. Cost for the lawyer for the two of them: $1,200. Heck the fine is only $200 haha.

I may or may not have some personal knowledge on this. You don't get the lawyer to save money. You get the lawyer to help get nolle prossed and expunge the arrest. Cut the right deal with a sympathetic judge, do the community service, and you can get out of it with just a hit on your checkbook, not on your record.

My buddies and I were at a party once that the police busted. Apparently, the people living there sold coke from the apartment. We ran from the cops, jumped a fence and hid behind AC units for about an hour until the police arrested the people that hosted the party. These kids just have no self-preservation motivation.
