NJ Raises Gas Tax by 23 Cents a Gallon

Post by 93henfan »

 Jersey used to be the place to stop for cheap gas when headed north. Not anymore.
TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic leaders announced Friday they have reached a deal for transportation funding that will raise New Jersey's gas tax by 23 cents a gallon, ending a summer-long standoff that led to a statewide construction freeze...

...At 37.5 cents a gallon, gas taxes in the Garden State will go from second-lowest in the U.S. to seventh-highest.

Yay taxes.

Where do I start? 1. Timing. 2. Magnitude (whatever happened to incrementalism) 3. Optics 4. What does lame-foie gras Christie get in return from the Donk legislature?

That's actually a good thing when it's raining or when there is still some mileage left on your joint.

Can't argue with your second point, but do they not have covered pumps in the Garden State?

They have covered pumps here and I got pretty soaked last night in the hurricane that isn't a hurricane we've been having here in Slower Delaware the last three days. 14 inches of rain and counting. Shit was coming in sideways at the pump last night.

For motorists, the higher gas taxes could come in early October. But it will be offset somewhat by a reduction in the sales tax from 7 percent to 6.875 in 2017 and 6.625 percent in 2018.

The sales tax is part of a package of tax cuts the lawmakers agreed to in exchange for the first gas tax hike since 1988. The compromise struck Friday afternoon also eliminates the estate tax, eases taxes on retirement income, boosts the Earned Income Tax Credit for the working poor and creates a tax deduction for veterans.
Meh. I really haven't been following this, but from that part of the article, I see this as a tax hike that will be partially paid for by non-NJ residents. And offset by tax cuts that NJ residents can benefit from. It's not like NJ residents that live close to the border with PA and NY are going to buy their gas outside of NJ. Their gas tax rates are still higher.

Gas taxes have been flat in most of the country for a long time. The funds raised by them aren't enough to pay for the infrastructure upkeep they were designed for. We have been needing to raise the gas taxes for a while now. Now the trick is to not squander the money.

Wrong. Most states have raised theirs in the last few years.

It's not about jobs it's about a pointless law that only two states have. There is no reason to force you to let someone else pump your gas. If it's all about jobs why don't we also require that someone else wipe your ass for $10/hour? It creates jobs!!! :ohno:

The law is in place because it is a fire hazard.

I'll still have someone pump my gas and fill it up after I cross the DelMemBr and before on my way to OCNJ every August. It'll still be cheaper than MD.

Not anymore. Maryland gas is still fairly reasonable and Delaware is even better, especially up by the bridge which is near refineries. Jersey used to be 10-15 cents cheaper and now it'll be 10-15 higher.

Wrong. Most states have raised theirs in the last few years.
Maybe so, I won't bother fact checking either of you on that one claim. But the truth is that gas taxes don't cover the infrastructure needs, at least in North Carolina. You either raise gas taxes, or look at other options like toll roads, etc. Wait until states start considering Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT's) as a funding option. Then people will really freak out. ;)

From a guy who works 100 miles away from home, yep. It'll be a nice bargaining chip for more telework though.

You'd have to be a complete idiot to pay the Delaware Turnpike toll when you can do the loop by Delaware stadium and grab a coffee at Wawa while completely skirting the tollbooths. Ten minute detour tops.
