I do not personally think there should be an estate tax. What I'm talking about is Democrat opportunities to make political hay. And when they do the class envy thing it works. Donald Trump's tax plan will definitely benefit "the rich" a lot more than it will benefit the "middle class" or anyone else. And estate tax elimination is part of that. The Democrats should be able to effectively demagogue on that.

Not only are there numbers like the thing about the average household in the top 1% benefitting by an average of over $122,400 while benefitting the average "middle class" household benefits by an average of about $500, the Democrats can point out how elimination of the estate tax only benefits a fraction of the top 1 percent but benefits the Trump family personally. And it's pretty much consensus that it'll significantly reduce national revenues. I don't personally mind that. But it presents the opportunity to scream about how his tax plan will cripple the country financially in order to benefit the top 1%. Surely you can see that.

Donald Trump's tax plan is, politically, low hanging fruit for the Democrats. I'll be shocked if I don't see the opportunity exploited between now and election day.
You're stepping on your own sack here John. Trump talks about dropping the estate tax rate and you chastise him while also saying you think there shouldn't be one at all?

I'm going to miss these JSO hilldog beat downs when this election cycle ends...of course I'm going to love him trying to sell everyone on hilldog being a competent president when she gets in the WH. Going to be tough determining which beat downs will be more entertaining.

If we must fund big government then I would like to to see the abolishment of property taxes and income taxes and all other taxes other then sales taxes.

Both federal and state government would be far more accountable to all people, regardless of political affiliation if all people were paying the same sales taxes for the same services.

Wouldn't need IRS or accountants or special interest, both people and business would pay up front at the moment of purchase, to much sales tax would pull all people together for the same reason.

IMO

Taxation is a game
Played by Congress
The U.S. citizen is the pawn
The Prize is funding of your pet projects
While convincing your constituents you did them some kind of favor

The winner is NEVER the middle class

The middle class will "win" this game
when Congress is populated with a majority of middle class congress people

Until then
I am instructed to behave in some manner as to hate my fellow citizen
While assisting in the game in which I have only one role - Pay My Taxes

BTW the debate poll thing gives me an opportunity to lament the way in which the media are incapable of presenting poll results in a way that provides proper perspective. First of all, they just can't seem to understand that the "margin of error" for the poll is the "margin of error" for the percentage favoring a candidate. It's not the margin of error for the difference.

In this case, the result of the CNN poll that had 48 percent of respondents saying Pence won while 42 percent said Kaine won is a "statistical tie." While the margin of error for the percent favoring an individual candidate is 4.5 percent, the margin of error for the difference between the two candidates is about 8.5. The 6 point difference in respondents for who "won" the debate is within the margin of error.

The other thing is that CNN kept saying the sample "over represented" Democrats. But the sample they got was pretty consistent with what exit polls have said about the electorate in recent previous elections. Here is a table to illustrate what I mean:

Image

The distribution of party affiliations in that poll was not inconsistent with the distribution of party affiliations in the past two general elections. The difference between 41 and 38 or 39 percent, for instance, can easily be random sampling error. There was no bias in favor of Democrats.

Anyway, the point is that the media have created the impression that Pence was clearly perceived as the winner by the majority who watched the debate when that is not the case and CNN itself created the impression that it's own poll was biased in favor of Democrats when that ALSO is not the case.

I don't know if it matters but in some cases it might.

You keep saying "no bias" and "CNN" in the same paragraph. They're mutually exclusive.

Say what you want to about their on-the-screen coverage.

But, that doesn't affect their polling. They're one of the most accurate polling groups. A- rated on 538. Barely any apparent bias (0.1 for Republicans).

Fox News is pretty biased on-screen... but, their polling is fairly reliable.

As I've said before Obama has taught these folks that being a liar will get you elected..twice
Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine likes to speak in Spanish on the campaign trail in hopes of appealing to Latino voters, but it was in 2005 that he was speaking another language when he lashed out at “the immigration problem” and the “inflood of illegal immigrants” afflicting his home state of Virginia.

“I’m deeply opposed to illegal immigration,” Kaine, then Virginia’s lieutenant governor, said during an Oct. 9, 2005 Virginia gubernatorial debate against Attorney General Jerry Kilgore.

“And I call on the federal government, the president, and immigration services to stop the inflood of illegal immigrants into this country.”

What I'm saying is that proposing dropping the estate tax is not a political winner at this time. Yes, I would like to see the estate tax dropped. As you know, I also think our tax system should not be one that operates by soaking the rich while a bunch of people pay very little and don't "feel" the burden of the cost of all the programs we have.

But regardless of my personal positions, "taxing the rich" is politically the more popular position right now. And if the Democrats point out that "only the rich" benefit from the estate tax being for keeping the estate tax is a political winner.

The Democrats can honestly say that Trump's tax plan benefits "the rich" a lot more than it benefits the "middle class" or "the poor." It's a situation custom made for class envy demagoguery and class envy demagoguery works. Doesn't matter if I personally think it should or not.

No, it doesn't matter, because there's no political principle you wouldn't betray to see Hildacoont elected. :coffee:
