My 1st thought was Ralph Sampson. He was born in Harrisonburg & was the #1 NBA pick in 83' out of UVA. Was a terror for his 1st 3 years with the Rockets, his 2nd & 3rd season teaming up with Hakeem Olajuwon. They lost in the NBA Finals to the Celtics his 3rd season. His next 6 seasons Rockets, Warriors, Kings & Bullets he was plagued by knee & back problems & his NBA career was over. 1st coaching gig was an assistant at JMU for a back in the early 90s..
