I only drive with 2 hands during hazzardous weather, or when I was young, trucks without power steering, and have never had an accident because of it. Most tractors I drove on the farm had a steering knob for turning with 1 hand. It's all about the driver going a safe speed, and driving with caution, when using phones, drinking soda, eating, singing along on the radio, or just driving in general. When I'm on the cell phone and driving, I'm in the slow lane and keep a safe distance from the car in front of me.

The compromise, sometimes it is a thing of beauty.
Missoula mayor vetoes most of cell phone ban

By The Associated Press

MISSOULA - Missoula's mayor has vetoed most of an ordinance that banned talking on a cell phone or texting while driving or cycling.

"I've heard from more citizens on this issue than nearly any other in my experience as mayor," John Engen said during Monday's Missoula City Council meeting.

"Most of those who contacted me want us to think about this a bit more and give more consideration to the use of hands-free devices."

The council had approved the ban on a 6-5 vote and now needs eight votes at its next meeting to override the veto.

Engen kept the provision that bars texting while driving, which pleased Councilman Dave Strohmaier, who proposed the measure.

Cell phone bans protect other motorists on the road.

The bans sought by Democrats attempt to protect us from "our self".

Seatbelt, Helmet and Smoking bans ARE indicae of a totalitarian (aka Waxman) state.
I would put Seatbelt and Helmet laws in a different category than Smoking laws, which are closer to cell phone laws.

Public smoking is hazardous to everyone around the smoker. Seatbelts/Helmets only affect those NOT wearing them.
I'm with Jon on this one. There is a difference between protecting someone from their own idiocy (seatbelt & helmet laws) and protecting people from someone else's idiocy (smoking & distracted driving laws). My kids have asthma and public smoking around them is a physical assault on their lungs not that different from me walking up to a stranger and punching them in the nose. If I can't assault a person's face with my fist why should someone be able to assault my kids' lungs with their cigarette smoke?

You should be able to qualify for the various skills while driving, and have the skills qualified for printed on your license. For instance, being able to pass a practical exam while talking on a cell phone, or eating a double thick burger, or reading while driving, or drunken driving. Yes, I said drunken driving, I swear I could be .02 and drive better than a lot of the licensed idiots out there horrifying the highways and byways.

Then you could apply for multi-tasking while driving, any combination of two or more distractions. I think I could talk on the phone, be .02, and eat hot wings while bombing down the interstate, and still pass.

The lady across the street couldn't pass a practical under any circumstances.

Here's the result, AZ...

...when CA banned cell talking while driving, folks were weaving around the road with a cell phone glued to their ear...one afternoon, out by my old office, I was sitting at an intersection and counted the number of people talking on their cell as a percentage of all vehicles...and it was around 70%. Some were looking down, either reading or looking at something other than the road, and some of those were in the process of making turning movements while talking and looking down.

That's just idiocy.

Today...I still see people talking while HOLDING their cell phone (well down into single digit percentage), but most are using hands free devices and have their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

And while I haven't seen any post-ban studies yet, I believe the ban has improved traffic conditions as getting stuck behind some wandering, 10 mph slower than the flow of traffic BMW navigated by a material-man engrossed in a phone call with his girlfriend, or the crooked neck teen weaving in and out of lanes while yammering with her boyfriend about the meaning of "flow", has seemingly dissappeared from CA's roadways.

Actually, I'm being selfish. I'm sick and tired of traffic delays due to slow/inattentive cellphone drivers or accidents caused by cellphone drivers. Give them their own lane separated by a concrete barrier, then let them drive slow and crash into each other all they want...they can even have sensors in that lane which modify their insurance rating accordingly so other drivers aren't picking up the tab for their decision to "indulge" in blabbering while driving....

As bad as traffic is in Charlotte, it's nothing like what you guys deal with out there. Glad I'm not there--won't be. I'm just messing with you and feel your pain, but that doesn't make it right.

No T....expecting people to focus on driving when behind the wheel as opposed to kids / cell / texting / make-up is not being selfish, just sensible and courteous....and the "distracted driver" law would be adequate if our court system would support enforcing of current laws by LE officers...they don't, so people push for even more laws on the books.....would love an amendment that would force the repealing of five un-enforced laws for every new law enacted...
