I've been following the local North Dakota news reporters. These local people have been to the site and followed the protest in Bismarck at the capital. MSM has been leaning towards the protester side. That's how they get viewers.

This is despite continued winter weather warnings from government agencies and the tribal chairman. The governor ordered a mandatory evacuation of the camp prior to last week's blizzard, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the camp would close Monday due to the weather and confrontations with law enforcement. Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II issued a video statement Monday requesting everyone go home in the wake of the army's decision to not approve the easement and to avoid the harsh winter.

All warnings have gone largely unheeded by the protesters, who want to see the pipeline officially stopped.

“The misinformation and lies that would come out from that certain segment is horrible," stated Laney.

He said some protesters would publish the home addresses of law enforcement and encourage people to take care of business that way.

“The fear that was put into our families, our spouse and children that are now home alone because mom or dad are away over here. And to find out your address has been published and their encouraging people to go take care of business," said Laney. " They won’t focus on that if they have to worry about their homes. That is terrorizing and a lot of that happened. It happened to me and to my people.”

"Finally they got it done, and pulled the pipe through," says Raffensperger. "I think it took about 12 hours to pull the pipe through. And we stood there in the rain and protested, and defended water, and cried."

I agree, the TPP was dead regardless of who was elected President, and clearly the Senate was never going to bring it to a vote. I think it probably would've been beneficial for the Senate to vote it down, as it would re-emphasize the idea that the Senate has to approve treaties before they become real for the US, but that would probably be lost on people anyway. Trump's executive order here would be called goaltending in basketball - it was clearly in the cylinder and clearly on it's way down before he did anything.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has cleared the way for the completion of the final leg of the Dakota Access Pipeline system that has become a subject of controversy in recent months. The Corps filed the necessary documents in a U.S. district court in Washington, D.C. to grant the final easement it had been ordered by ex-President Barack Obama last December to withhold pending the conduct of a supplemental environmental review. The Corps also filed the required notice to congress about its decision to forego the review and grant the easement, as President Donald Trump instructed in his presidential order issued two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, efforts by local officials to begin cleaning up the tons of trash and human waste created by the protesters have begun in earnest, and videos and photos of the filth are beginning to make their way into the news media slowly but surely. One Morton County official estimates that it will take 250 large truckloads to clear the site of trash. A complicating factor to the cleanup effort is that much of the garbage is frozen in ice due to the harsh winter conditions.

"Standing Rock Environmental Protection Agency and Dakota Sanitation are working together to try and advert an environmental tragedy," Tom Doering, Morton County Emergency Manager, was quoted as saying. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has on several occasions expressed its concern about the practice by the outside protesters of using open latrines in what is a flood plain that, if left unaddressed before the spring thaw begins, would inevitably cause runoff to flow into waters that the Tribe uses for drinking water and other purposes.

I read that about the crap all the protestors left, including the danger of the runoff getting into the drinking water. That's the danger of protests - it's great to get rid of some pent up anger and energy, but it almost never leads to sustained, concrete positions and a view to the long term.

I'm not sure how I feel about greatly increasing pipelines throughout America - obviously at some point there's a fall off in terms of the return on investment. However, considering this pipeline was massive and pretty much done except for this one crossing (of which apparently there are already other crossings that lead to this place anyway) it always seemed like political cowardice on Obama's administration to let this one spot get blocked by protests.
