Something About This Russia Story Stinks

Nearly a decade and a half after the Iraq-WMD faceplant, the American press is again asked to co-sign a dubious intelligence assessment
By Matt Taibbi

In an extraordinary development Thursday, the Obama administration announced a series of sanctions against Russia. Thirty-five Russian nationals will be expelled from the country. President Obama issued a terse statement seeming to blame Russia for the hack of the Democratic National Committee emails.

"These data theft and disclosure activities could only have been directed by the highest levels of the Russian government," he wrote.

Russia at first pledged, darkly, to retaliate, then backed off. The Russian press today is even reporting that Vladimir Putin is inviting "the children of American diplomats" to "visit the Christmas tree in the Kremlin," as characteristically loathsome/menacing/sarcastic a Putin response as you'll find.

This dramatic story puts the news media in a jackpot. Absent independent verification, reporters will have to rely upon the secret assessments of intelligence agencies to cover the story at all.
Many reporters I know are quietly freaking out about having to go through that again. We all remember the WMD fiasco.

"It's déjà vu all over again" is how one friend put it.

I left "to NATO" out of my question.

We never left the Cold War mindset, and it has not only gotten us to where we are, but it could also be the reason that we even know the name Vladimir Putin outside of intel circles.

The better news is the clueless donks will be left sifting through the donk ashes Obama has left them...good thing they chose smart people like Pelosi and Shumer to lead the way. Whoops. :dunce:

So, what do you think is the proper response on the part of a President if it is determined that the Russians make an active effort to, through cyber attack, interfere with a United States Presidential election?

Use a stronger password? Don't click on links from goggle.com? Crack down on private servers being used to process classified information? Prevent Secretaries of State from directing their uncleared foreign-born maids to print and handle classified emails when nobody is around watching them?

Just throwing things out there.

I would like the president to put up the evidence. Assange says he got it from an insider. Obama needs to put up or STFU.

When you stop to consider that Putin is the leader of Russia specifically because the Russian people want someone who will poke the US in the eye for 25 years of spiking the football over the end of the Soviet Union....

Everything Russia has done since Boris Yeltsin died has been a REACTION to the actions of the US. We've never stopped playing Cold War games, even when Yeltsin was turning inward, trying to prop up the Russian economy (and doing his best to ignore that NATO was gobbling up their former buffer states)

But yeah... Putin's playing Cold War as fast as the US tail can wag his dog.

Imagine if the roles were reversed...if Republicans were trying to blame hacks on the RNC on an election loss with tenuous evidence... Obama would be saying "the 1980s called" and left wing bloggers would be talking about the return of McCarthyism and how Republicans need to do some soul-searching about their message rather than fearmongering.

We're not talking about an actual government server getting hacked. We're talking about the DNC. I can't muster a single fvck to give about that, especially after an undercover journalist secretly recorded Mitt Romney's "47 percent" comments and brought it to light.

What goes around comes around. Donks need to just give this one up.

Even when the person leaking the information says Russia didn't have any part in it? Has the President or anyone shown us proof? We're supposed to take them at their word? Plus, it isn't the nefarious emails and actions taken by the DNC that upsets the President and Democrats - it's the fact that they've been shown for the pieces of crap that they are.

Exactly.

Russia is a distraction...period.

The US involves itself in everyone else's elections...and we get our panties in a bunch when some other country tries to influence ours? By revealing the truth about the DNC trying to influence the election for Hillary over Bernie?

How much money did the Saudis give Clinton? How much money did the Saudis give the DNC? Is that not influence? Where's the outrage?

Russia is only our enemy if we make them our enemy.

Oh, Turkey and Russia agree on a cease fire in Syria...without Obama. Without Europe.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? How can that be?

Trump is correct...let those countries figure their crap out among themselves. No need for us to be so involved in that mess.

I will admit that I am making an assumption that if the FBI and CIA both concluded that the hacks were Russian in nature there is more than "tenuous" evidence. But at the very least I don't see how you can know that the evidence IS tenuous.
