When will it end?

Yes. It's an endless cycle. Right now, we are tired of sucking.houndawg wrote:We're going to be so great that we'll get tired of being great!

See, I knew you were a Trumpist all along. Glad to see you're finally embracing the Trumpster. How high should we set the tariff? Can we even set it too high???kalm wrote:Whoa there! Wait a second!
You mean to tell me he's leveraging the awesome buying power of our markets to support domestic manufacturing?
But, but, but...Smoot Hawley!!!
Quick, someone call Ganny!

As you're alluding to, we may not even have to set the tariff...hence the leverage of our markets.GannonFan wrote:See, I knew you were a Trumpist all along. With that said, the beauty of Trump, possibly, is that he could do all of this and not have to pass a single bit of legislation or executive order, just on the basis of his personality and the threat of action. He's such a wild card, and he's perceived to be one, that he could do it.

No, hence the leverage of a guy in the Oval Office who could follow through on what he says. Trump is believable enough about his bluster that people have already started to move on things they would've waited on if it were just another politician. I'm not sure it's necessarily sustainable, but Trump will have the ability to make significant changes early on while people are still trying to figure him out.kalm wrote:As you're alluding to, we may not even have to set the tariff...hence the leverage of our markets.GannonFan wrote:

But if we have to...it will be yuge!

Agreed, but the leverage has always been there. It takes a non-globalist to apply it.GannonFan wrote:No, hence the leverage of a guy in the Oval Office who could follow through on what he says. Applying it with tangible laws is different than applying it with repeated bluster. Trump's uniqueness is that he can leverage it without instituting things like Hawley-Smoot. It's a fine line, but an important one. It leaves us flexible and it leave the rest of the world scrambling to react to a moving target. We throw down a hard tariff via a law and not only is it tough for us to adjust it later on, but it puts the stake in the ground that everyone else can adjust around. Trump could do something that very few other, if any, politicians could do. But we still have to see if Trump can do this himself too.kalm wrote:Agreed, but the leverage has always been there. Eh, I don't think bluster is something that can be handed from administration to administration, but I could see Trump being successful doing this bluster through his administration. It's all personality, which is what he was elected on (that, and the personality of his opponents) so as long as he's Donald he might be able to make this work for a while.CAA Flagship wrote:The bluster can only last so long and go so far. At some point, he will need to take action on something in order to maintain effective bluster. But it sure is interesting to see the current bluster working.

This is very true, and you have to wonder if it's business acumen, luck, or both.Chizzang wrote:The great thing about the pomp and bluster working is - You can't make a bad thing out of it..
So much of politics and political maneuverings is that they can be spun in so many directions
Making hard to know what to believe
With Trump making blanket threats and playing high stakes chicken with companies
Ultimately no bad legislation has been passed to back his position
It's just Trump - being Trump
and it's working until somebody at one of the majors calls bullsh!t on him and forces legislation

And do you think he's had a come to Jesus meeting yet with the true money guys or if he ever will?93henfan wrote:This is very true, and you have to wonder if it's business acumen, luck, or both.Chizzang wrote:The great thing about the pomp and bluster working is - You can't make a bad thing out of it..

Both. Business acumen is the surfer, luck is the wave.93henfan wrote:This is very true, and you have to wonder if it's business acumen, luck, or both.Chizzang wrote:The great thing about the pomp and bluster working is - You can't make a bad thing out of it..
