The Kansas City Chiefs
QB Alex Smith has taken the Chiefs as far as he can...
He just can't make the long throws to back the defense off the line of scrimmage, effectively killing their running game. Defensive safeties can now linger 12 yards off the line and no wide out needs to be double covered more than 20 yards down field... Alex Smith offers no deep threat
It's time:
Adding a more dynamic quarterback, given the influx of speed and play makers they have injected on offense the past 24 months, it's time to find a more profound option at quarterback...

Should be easy. There is such a glut of quality QB's around. When a guy like Brock Osweiler can garner $72,000,000 it must be easy to find one.
They need to draft a QB
They won't because I'm pretty sure Andy Reid doesn't see it that way... But Alex Smith has hit his glass ceiling
Who do they draft? They're at #27 in the first round so the top 3 QB's will be gone. Suppose they could draft one in the later rounds but to think that QB is going to be able to beat out Alex Smith in this off-season is pretty optimistic.

Yeah, I don't think a Patrick Mahomes is the answer for KC.

I hope you're being sarcastic here. Mahomes would run circles (literally and figuratively) around Alex Smith.

Here's what I think I know...
Not drafting a QB is going to leave KC exactly where they are right now
Almost every year there's a surprise QB in the draft
4 years ago Russell Wilson 3rd round
3 years ago Derek Carr 2nd round Fresno FUCKING state
2 years ago Dak Presscott
Joe Flacco / Jimmy Goropolo / there's 2nd teir guys all over the place that could beat out Alex Smith

There are, and that's why you draft one if you think you may need one. But then look at the poor Browns.
1999 - Tim Couch
2000 - Spergon Wynn
2004 - Luke McCown
2005 - Charlie Frye
2007 - Brady Quinn
2010 - Colt McCoy
2012 - Brandon Weedon
2014 - Johnny Manziel
2016 - Cody Kessler
The Patriots draft a QB almost every year...
Why do you think that is..?
I agreed that you draft a QB. What I was pointing out is that teams whiff all the time on QB's. Just drafting one in no way means you'll be OK at the QB spot. Shit, look at the Redskins for the last 20 years. Kirk Cousins is the best QB they've had in a long time.
BTW, the Pats average one QB every two years in the draft.

My point is:
You draft one every two years - need one or not
Something Andy Reed does not understand at all

Your point? Still can't tell if you're being serious about Mahomes or not. He would be a huge upgrade at QB for KC....
You don't know that. There are busts every single year. You're a little too close to be impartial on him.
Yes, there are busts every single year. I've watched two years of Tech football. Enough to know that Mahomes will be just fine in the NFL. Juuuuust fine. How much Mahomes film have you watched?

Which is kind of interesting considering Reid's experience under Holmgren in Green Bay. They picked up Farve in a trade and drafted 6 QBs in 7 years including Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell and Matt Hasselbeck.
Late first round can be a great time to grab a QB. Lower costs and pressure than a top 10/20 pick and the team still has the option on the 5th year so you have a little longer to develop them. You'll sometimes see teams trade up into the late 1st round to take a 2nd round QB because of that.

It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

This ^ is something I hadn't considered...
Reid comes from the school of "Draft a QB" even when you don't think you need one
Inexcusable on his part

It's not just about quarterbacks with the Chiefs. They've had a couple really good TEs over the years, but is there a franchise with a worse platoon of WRs over the last 3 decades than Kansas City?
If you take out Gonzalez, their all-time leading receiver is Otis Taylor. He retired 41 years ago.

And Gonzalez wasn't even technically a receiver.
I think it was last year when they didn't have a receiver catch a TD until week 17?
I hope not. He's so fragile his bones might break with the crowd noise at Arrowhead.

Frustratingly true. I was a huge Otis Taylor fan growing up.

Reid definitely has his warts (can't win the big one, a little too loyal to his players like Alex Smith, etc.) but he beats what the Chiefs had recently (only successful coaches since Stram have been Schottenheimer and Vermeil). Which brings up a question - would you rather be tantalizingly close but not able to get over the hump (a la Reid) or mired in mediocrity (a la Crennel, Haley, Edwards, etc.)?
