I honestly don't think it was much of a factor. I mean, I think it exists. But I think what happened is that the Democrats picked a nominee who had almost insurmountable "headwinds." Like being under FBI investigation because she was foolish enough to do that private server thing and having the Russians and/or Wikileaks or whoever after her.

I think if Obama could've run for a third term he would've blown Trump out both popular vote wise and electoral vote wise. I also think Bernie Sanders also would've blown Trump out. It wasn't a "left" thing. It was a "Hillary" thing.

The talk from the left now is that these protests/violent outbursts are fine because they aren't denying the person free speech, they're just denying them a platform. I'm a little uncertain of the distinction between the two but the left seems very comfortable with this rationalization and is moving ahead.

The point is that it wasn't a matter of the philosophy of the left losing. It was the matter of the Party of the left ending up with a candidate that had all sorts of problems. The Party of the right did that too. It was an amazing thing. Each Party picked an absolutely atrocious candidate.

But to think Donald Trump winning the election with a lower percentage of the popular vote than Mitt Romney got is a repudiation of the philosophy of the "left" is kidding yourself. Had the Democrats not had a candidate who screwed up to get under FBI investigation, etc., Trump would've been pistol whipped.
