Spare me, nimrod. You pretend to "love the idea of God" so you can be a snark.

You asked a question. I provided my thoughts on the question, in good faith, even though I KNEW you were just trying to be a snark. And just like a trained monkey, you gave your snarky rejoinder. I knew it was coming, but I responded any way, because important questions shouldn't be ignored just because the person who asked it intends to be a snark. But you never let me down. You are predictable.

You do know that the Catholic Church in China is underground, due to fervent persecution? The Pope recently named a Cardinal in China, and had to keep his identity secret. Are you aware of that?

Holding a meeting with the Dalai Lama would cause even greater risk to the Church members in China. This doesn't have anything to do with what the Pope thinks about the Dalai Lama, or Buddhists.

You sure about that?
Pretty sure. Words are translated wrongly, books were chosen b/c they tell a certain story, fishermen in 7 BC Judea were more likely to be illiterate than not (an NOT named Mark or Simon).

Oh that's right, you believe that men suddenly believed in God and gained the power of literacy. That makes sense. :thumb:

Joe,
All you have to do to avoid any snark is open your statement with
"Well, nobody really knows....but"
and then proceed to blow smoke out of your ass

You're getting a little sensitive in your old age man...
Also you can bask in the knowledge that Satan will punish me for ever and ever in flame

Aw. What's not Christ like about this response? Nimrod is Latin for "Beloved." And in literature, a trained monkey is a loyal companion who will someday be with you in Heaven.

Not magic. Just a higher form of existence/reality, when we shed the mere five senses that limit how we experience what is real. Do you really think there are only five ways to experience truth and reality?

Who knows what precisely comes next? But, logically, it is either something better, something worse, or nothing.

I choose to have faith that our existences mean something, and that what comes next is something better.

Thanks for the philosophy lesson. Can't we all agree that religion is personal. Live your life the way you want to and leave others alone. Be good to others and they'll be good to you. Didn't some hippie carpenter from the Middle East say something to that effect?

I didn't start this thread. Some hippie from the Northwest did. He asked a question about what Pope Francis meant. I provided an answer, and then I was mocked by the High, Holy Snarky One.

You choose to believe in something outside of our 5 senses, but you also choose stick to logic in which you see only three possibilities? :suspicious:

I didn't say you did. Both of you can act rather sanctimonious. We all can be.

In all seriousness, I have a few questions. I'm interested in your take and this is in no way to bait or "troll" you. I genuinely like to hear people perspectives.

1) How do you reconcile logic, reasoning and common sense with the idea that a group of illiterate middle eastern men followed a stranger who performed magic tricks like walking on water, turning water into wine (which don't get me started on how that is wrong) among other things?

1a) How can someone claim logic and reasoning while believing in a book that claims so many supernatural events?
IMO, it comes down to a literal vs allegorical interpretation of the bible.

2) If we are made in Gods image. And we use what God has given us, to include reasoning and logic, shouldn't we critically examine the Bible and realize that these are stories, written hundreds and thousands of years after the events for a specific audience and that the focus should be on the message rather than the "facts?" Some of the events can be explained (the Great Flood or the Plaques) but the stories have become embellished to the point where people today actually believe the entire world was under water and that Arctic animals traveled to the Middle East to get on a boat. :twocents: And shouldn't we take church history and its corruption into account? As well as world history, for that matter in an effort to better understand the historical context in which Bible stories take place?

The answer (obviously) to his question "can't we all agree Religion is personal" is no...
Because that's not how religions grow

No, more like wine wasn't really in that part of the world yet, it was most likely beer. You think grapes are going to prosper in the desert? However, the greeks translated the alcohol into what they knew, which was wine. Kind of how that incorrectly transcribed a young girl into a virgin. They are two different words.

Yeah, that's flat wrong.

Wine was all over the there BC. Not to mention that Palestine was a ROMAN territory. The first thing the Romans would do when they would enter a new area is plant all the vineyards they could. Wine was there before the Romans, but exploded afterwards. And, it's not complete desert.

And, that's not to mention all of the wine symbolism and allegory in the New Testament. Not just turning water into wine - the workers in the vineyards, I am the True Vine... and the Last Supper. Do you think the Last Supper was meant to be beer? :?
