I'm not sure about mine yet. They specifically mentioned drastic cuts to "development assistance" yesterday in WaPo and The Hill which sent alarm bells off in my office. That is EXACTLY what we do. We got a visit from Tillerson several days ago and nobody had a warm and fuzzy afterward.

What else is there to say? Trump is a mentally ill person with the personality of a petulant twelve year-old, and anyone who voted for him is an automaton with Nazi leanings.

It was like every other joint address IMO. Blah blah platitudes blah blah America blah blah half the room is sitting down the whole time.....I noticed Pelosi had her broom next to her so she could fly off in a quick exit afterward. 8-)

It did seem he toned down the rhetoric a bit and SEEMED a bit more presidential in this speech over any other I've heard. If he delivers on half of what he said he'll be in the top 5 prez's of all time.

I texted that same thing to 93 during the speech last night.

Trumps best, most presidential speech yet. More uplifting thatn the inaugural. Wasn't campaignish like his speech in FL was last week. Definitely wasn't as atagonistic towards the left.

Yes, I also noticed that somebody else wrote it.

He did do a good job reading the teleprompter.

I didn't watch live it but I can tell he benefitted just by virtue of not going off the rails. At the same time, I had to shake my head at how bad he was at doing the teleprompter thing after watching excerpts. After all that crap in the primaries where he criticized others for using teleprompters. At least the people he was talking about can use a teleprompter without sounding like that.

I do think he exceeded expectations but as the linked article indicates the audience was disproportionately inclined to support Trump to begin with.

I don't see previous Presidents discussed in the CBS article but CNN addressed that and noted that the approval of his performance ranked below the performances of G.W. Bush and B. Obama in their initial addresses to Congress:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/28/politics/ ... ress-poll/
While the 57% who said they had a very positive reaction to Trump's speech outpaces the marks received by his predecessor for any of his recent State of the Union addresses, they fell below the reviews either Barack Obama or George W. Bush received for either of their initial addresses to Congress. In 2009, 68% had a very positive reaction to Obama, while 66% gave Bush very positive reviews in 2001. Likewise, the 69% of speech-watchers who thought Trump's policies would move the nation in the right direction lagged behind the share who felt that way about Obama's or Bush's policies in the first year, and ranks around their low-marks on this score. Obama's low-mark on that score was 68% last year and his high was 88% in 2009. Bush topped out at 91% in 2002 and hit a low mark of 67% in the final year of his presidency.

Bush's first address was after 9/11, no? The country was in rally mode at that point. He could have made fart noises with his armpit and it would have gotten a standing ovation.

And of course, Obama was the first negro to do the bit, so everyone wanted him to be successful as well.

Conversely, 90% of the media and 52% of the country want Trump to fail, to spite the state of our union.

Well, in his defense, he yelled that at a subsequent address to Congress much further along in Obama's first year (think it was September'ish), he didn't go all salty in the first address to Congress.

Well, 93 included GWB's address after 9/11. Which wasn't his first either.

So, thought we were just talking about first year addresses. :thumb:

I guess I can look it up but I doubt it. What we're talking about is the first address to Congress after being elected. Trump just did it and it was February. I doubt that Bush's first address was in September.

Ok I looked it up and the answer is "no." G.W. Bush's first address to Congress was on February 27, 2001. So it was well before 9/11.

Well, at this point I think we can say that any suggestion that Donald Trump had become a grown up because he was able to clumsily read a teleprompter for a while during that speech to Congress can be dismissed.

It's a joint address. He's not really in a position to give an address on the past year since he wasn't in office (as is the tradition). :thumb:
He was already in office and cutting deals Putin long before he was elected on a technicality. :coffee:
