Muslims converting to Christians in Lebanon

Post by YoUDeeMan »

Converting is legal in Lebanon...not Syria and many other Muslim countries.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/worl ... /98685852/

"Why some Muslim Syrian refugees are converting to Christianity"

"The pastor won’t say how many refugees his evangelical church has converted, but he says there are dozens of Bible study groups for refugees in Lebanon.

But others raise questions about that faith. Even some Christian leaders and other Syrian Christian refugees say they think the converts are just looking for assistance and help to immigrate to Western countries. Bishop Saliba denies this and insists that he questions potential converts to ensure their faith is genuine.

“When I see a person wishes to be Christian, I don’t stop him,” he said, “but we try to test him.”

Abu Radwan, the convert, says he does get assistance from the church — about $200 a month. And he believes that being Christian will help his family get resettled in a Western country.

“Of course it will be easier,” he said.

The United Nations does resettlement based on vulnerability criteria — essentially, how much an individual or family is at risk. In the past, the U.S. has used the same criteria. It hasn’t given preference to Christians, though President Trump has said it’s a priority for his administration. Few Western countries do put Christians at the head of the line, though some have church sponsorship programs for refugees."

So, are they converting to become closer to Jesus, or are they converting for the aid and to get out? :suspicious:

While I realize that it might not work out I think there is a significant difference between the two religions. Christianity is a little complicated by the fact that the Old Testament described some pretty aggressive war mongering stuff. But if you look at the central figure of the Faith he was a man of peace. Turn the other cheek. Love your enemy. He who lives by the sword will die by the sword. That sort of thing.

Not so with Islam. The central figure of that Faith was a military leader. Totally different paradigm.

JSO-

The central premise of these religions is that there is a deity who created us and talks to us. That's it. You can choose to believe or not.

The "rules" are a human construct and that's a separate issue.

I think many would argue that the central premise is also a human construct. The "rules" are important from a practical standpoint

If you take what Jesus is quoted as saying in the New Testament you are going to be a pacifist. That is not the case if you take what Muhammed is deemed to have said. You're not going to see Jesus quoted as having said something like, ""And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out."

Just depends on how you read it and what passages you choose to accentuate.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Islam is way shittier than Christianity (no question)
But I won't spend any time apologizing for either as they are both pretty ridiculous

On the one hand I agree that it matters less what they call themselves and more what they think is acceptable behavior.

On the other hand, you don't ever hear much about Christians in the ME pushing gays off of roofs or killing non-believers or trying to conquer their neighbors, so I see this as a positive.
