Only I don't wear a helmet. One thing I've never understood is why people have to dress like they often do to ride a bicycle. Me, I put on a pair of shorts and some flip flops. To me part of it is feeling light and carefree, the crisp spring wind blowing through your hair, etc.CAA Flagship wrote: Good call. One thing I really liked about living on St. Simons Island, GA, back in the 1980s was how bike friendly it is. Bike trails all over the Island. Then there are bike trails along the Causeway leading to the mainland so you can ride there too. Had I wanted to I could've done just about anything i wanted to do using a bicycle for transportation. I rode my bike a lot back then.

Today it was my 1978 Schwinn Varsity. Love that old bike. It was a big part of my transportation plan when I was in college. Used it a lot to go to school and to work.

I think I'm the only one in the continental USA that stops at a stop sign on a bicycle. You are out there to ride a bicycle and get exercise and all these lazy azzes cruise thru stop signs, because it's sooooo hard to stop and get going again. I am old school, no helmet, no tights, no gel seats, just my old touring bike from the 1970's that I bought at a police auction. I don't like to ride on the roads because of people like Ursus and AZGriz and their attitude towards all bikers. Just because 99 percent are idiots, doesn't mean you have to take it out on the other 1 percent that obey the rules and are courteous. The trails I ride on all include a fee, either a 1 day pass or season ticket, so yes the bikers in my area are paying for the trails.

Trail tolls? I likey. But it probably pushes more people on the roads. I think I would rather pay a tax.Gil Dobie wrote:I think I'm the only one in the continental USA that stops at a stop sign on a bicycle. There is also the trails/walking paths in the city, that are basically glorified sidewalks. The homeowners and city are paying for these, not the bikers and walkers and kids in strollers and skate rats etc.CAA Flagship wrote:Trail tolls? I likey. Hey Grizzall, I drove that road every day for about 10 yrs. and I know the huge amount of passing assholes on that road. Saw it almost every week day. The fucking retards spreading out 3 or 4 wide on the road in between Salmon and Seeley is another fucking level of assholery and just outright trying to provoke others. Cattle drive would be annoying but that is necessary so it doesn't really compare.Grizalltheway wrote:Yeah and on that very same stretch of road there are countless inconsiderate douches who speed and attempt to pass when they have no business doing so, putting other people at risk. So I guess what I'm saying is inconsiderate douches are going to be inconsiderate douches regardless of what conveyance they're using.Ursus A. Horribilis wrote: The cyclists that do the TOSRV every year from Missoula up through Seeley etc. should be fucking mowed down because they are the most inconsiderate fucking douches I've came across on a road.
They will take up as much room as they feel like while cars line up behind them. Fuck them assholes.
Shit I got held up by a cattle drive on Highway 12 one time but that doesn't mean all ranchers are assholes.

I use the bike and Mountain Line in Missoula as well so it's not like I don't see the value as a transportation resource but stay the fuck out of the way of traffic is the gist of it.

I agree, and with Missoula in particular you don't have much excuse with all the bike lanes and whatnot.Ursus A. Re: Cycling in Montana
If we built roads for just bikes, the roads would last until the concrete broke up from the weather, not the wear. I cycle and I can promise you that I always obey the rules of the road and go out of my way to stay away from traffic. I don't ride where I don't feel I can safely stay away from the vehicular assholes. There are more of them than asshole cyclists by the way. I wouldn't be opposed to licensing and taxing bikes, just do it on a road wear and carbon footprint compared to a car or tractor/trailer.

I have to respectfully disagree. I live by a lake in Minnesota. There are very few people that obey any type of traffic law on a bicycle, compared to drivers. There are many more courteous drivers compared to bikers.GrizFanStuckInUtah wrote:If we built roads for just bikes, the roads would last until the concrete broke up from the weather, not the wear. I've seen people in Utah get tickets on their bikes and I think they should if they don't follow the rules. People really do drive terrible here. It probably won't be long and I will start packing on my bike, between the dogs and drivers.Gil Dobie wrote:I have to respectfully disagree. I live by a lake in Minnesota. Re: Cycling in Montana
Utah drivers are the worst I have ever encountered, think rules do not apply to them. I have wondered if the LDS culture leads to this mentality.

The guy in the article wants to prevent bicycles on roads with less than three feet of shoulder. In your pic, you didn't have that and would be banned from riding on that road. Not sure if it includes residential, but even if it didn't in Montana, that takes a shitload of cycling out of the picture.
Like taking away 70% of the rides and only leaving you with shitty short rides.

You know I ride and all I have to say about your comment is that you are correct! Fucking hate cyclists who don't ride as far to the right, especially when it's a big speed difference.Ursus A. I can stay to the right of a white line with very little shoulder. It's the rule that the back rider is supposed to start the chain of people saying "car back" and getting into single file.
