How N.Korea can kill 90% of Americans

Post by Ibanez »

The mainstream media, and some officials who should know better, continue to allege North Korea does not yet have capability to deliver on its repeated threats to strike the U.S. with nuclear weapons. False reassurance is given to the American people that North Korea has not “demonstrated” that it can miniaturize a nuclear warhead small enough for missile delivery, or build a reentry vehicle for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of penetrating the atmosphere to blast a U.S. city.

Yet any nation that has built nuclear weapons and long-range missiles, as North Korea has done, can easily overcome the relatively much simpler technological challenge of warhead miniaturization and reentry vehicle design.
In February and March of 2015, former senior national security officials of the Reagan and Clinton administrations warned that North Korea should be regarded as capable of delivering by satellite a small nuclear warhead, specially designed to make a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack against the United States. According to the Congressional EMP Commission, a single warhead delivered by North Korean satellite could blackout the national electric grid and other life-sustaining critical infrastructures for over a year—killing 9 of 10 Americans by starvation and societal collapse.

Two North Korean satellites, the KMS-3 and KMS-4, presently orbit over the U.S. on trajectories consistent with surprise EMP attack.

Yeah, but I see that more as an odd way to feed their population. I mean...fishing is one thing but that's an odd way to harvest them.

An EMP blast knocking out the grid nation wide? That would be one hell of an explosion that probably has more energy than all the nukes in the world. It's not like there's one target that could be taken out that would disable the whole grid.

If NK were stupid enough to try it, I'm sure we could make very short work of them.

Yeah, there's also the fact that we could kill 100% of them thousands of times over.

What's the endgame? Just destruction? North Korea bombs the US and then what? They colonize the mainland? That is if our "allies" don't fight them.

Well, it's been considered.

Read "One Second After" by Bill Forstchen

Consider that if the lights go out and all electronics are fried, we will immediately go back to 1850

The first people to die will be elderly, sick, insulin dependent diabetics, etc

The food will be gone within a few weeks. If it happens in spring that will be better than if it happens in late summer because a crop will come in, but that will only benefit those who grow it and can defend it

Internecine conflicts will start within the first two months.

It will take more than a year to get the lights back on because we dont have replacement grid transformers. I think replacements would have to be made and transported from .... South Korea....

Maybe no 90% but I'd guess we'd lose a good 40% of the population in an EMP attack after 1-2 years and it would take just 3 or 4 small warheads to shut the entire country off

Very plausible, and not just from enemy action - there was a solar flare in the 1860s that would have creamed one whole side of the globe if it had happened in the current age

Shutting down the US would be the end of the US, and part of what would wind up being a global war that would make the casualty levels of WWII look like the Soccer War

That book and the follow up (recommended by CID) are the reasons I accumulate ammo and have precautions in place in case the SHTF. I'm not a prepper, but I'm somewhat prepared in the case of an incident like this. It didn't help that the book is set right where I grew up and not far from my current backyard.

I ordered a little folding pistol caliber carbine last week (Kel Tec sub 2000) and have been ordering accessories today to make it a bit more robust. It's a common caliber with my pistols - I'm not going to pull a Rick from Walking Dead and have to walk from Atlanta to DC to scavenge .44 magnum ammo when 9MM is all over the place. :coffee:

I think about this issue every day.

We tend to ignore vulnerabilities until after they happen. For many years there was talk of how people could use airplanes to make suicide attacks in America. Tom Clancy even made it a part of his Jack Ryan series. But we didn't do anything about it until after it was actually employed against us.

This threat is truly existential - there won't be any adjustment making after the fact of an EMP attack or a catastrophic solar flare. It will be the end.

But we will never take it seriously, and if I had to predict how the US will end, it will be in this manner

An EMP taking out a chunk of the power grid would be devastating, but the Chinese (and I'm certain the Russians) have also demonstrated their ability to take a satellite out of orbit with missiles. I'm assuming we have redundancies in the military, but imagine the impact to the US battlefield with the loss of GPS.

I don't think anyone really knows fore sure how much power you could knock out with an EMP blast. It's not like it's been tested. I have my doubts, because that would be a very big energy flux covering a very large area.

I would be more worried about solar gamma ray bursts like CID alluded to because a nuke isn't even a firecracker compared to energy the sun can release. I wish we would show 1/10th the concern about that as we do about climate change.

I think you can safely say that it's not in the interest of pretty much every advanced country on Earth for the lights to go out in even a significant part of America. I would think China might roll over and squash North Korea if they were really stupid enough to try an EMP strike.

We don't even need an EMP attack. 50 special forces soldiers in 10 groups of 5 could do significant damage to our electrical grid.

You may be right, but I read recently that the US electrical grid isn't even hardened enough to handle sun-related storms. It could potentially have the same impact as an event that originated in NK or elsewhere.

Type 'B61' into your favorite search engine.
Our Congress Critters are debating whether to spend $20 billion making them "better"

They're simple gravity bombs deliverable at up-to 2,000 feet per second from any American air platform built in the last 50 years. You can 'dial-them-up' between 2- to 20X 'Hiroshimas'

The point being: Before any ICBM from the DPRK enters its decent phase, Little Un's Artillery will be glass-ified in a tactical, surgeon-like precision attack; because closeness always counts in the accuracy of strategic weaponry. AND ... this is just the stuff we brag about. I bet we gots some seriously illegal strategic toys, too. USA! USA!

More importantly, this would be a mere polite precursor to the FBM Boomers joining the party. We only have 18 of them, so ... I wonder what the over/under is on Shock-&-Awe in NK? It's only the size of Mississippi. mmMM ...

2X UGM-133s from 6 FBMs (7,500+ mile/range) = 12 x 12 ((MIRVs) = 750 Hiroshima-equivelent

Is that enough? Want more?
You can't blow-back to the Stone Age what is already there.

If you got the Sub2000 in 9mm I recommend going and shooting the fuck out of it (at least 500 rounds) before the warranty is up. I have the .40cal version and have had no problems yet, I have 3 friends that have 9mms all have been sent back for repair, one locked the mag in place after it was empty and no way to eject, the other two had the mechanism seize up, no way to operate the action. Its a really cool gun but I wonder about the durability............now

I pick it up today (Gen 2 FTR) and plan to shoot Saturday. With the 33 round happy stick mags I don't think I'll have any problem getting to a few hundred rounds pretty quickly. I'll let ya know on reliability.

I have the 31 round mags for mine. When the 40 is folded up it fits perfectly in the map pocket on the back of the passenger seat in the Challenger.

Do let me know, I have been making fun of my buddies for "buying junk guns like the 9mm" Its not but it is now that theirs are broke. 8-)

Tillerson ain't too concerned.

N Korea launched another missle attack on the fish in he Sea of Japan.

His statement (in full):
. North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile. The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment.
I actually like it. Don't give them the attention they crave.
