John,
You're missing a FUNDAMENTAL point...
Broadband access ceased to be a "Service" when we all paid to build the infrastructure
It is now a public utility as THE PUBLIC paid to build it

Uber is a service
Netflix is a service

Access to water / Access to Electricity / Etc...
and now Broadband

are publicly built and publicly maintained through TAX DOLLARS
Effectively WE the People own them
In my area I was not under the impression that the infrastructure was built with tax dollars. I was under the impression that Eatel built the fiber optic network, laid the fiber optic lines, etc. And it's not a complete monopoly in my area. You have the option of either choosing the Eatel fiber optic system or the Cox cable system (my impression is Cox also built it's infrastructure).

But I do agree that there is a good argument for saying that we have reached the point where it should be considered a utility like water or electricity.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

It wasn't until my mid 30's that I was introduced to the term "the commons". Sometimes, we really suck at history and civics.

I hadn't heard of the terminology until you typed it and I'm a lot older than my 30s. However, after Googling it some it looks like there is plenty of grey area and I'm not sure that something like broadband internet service if part of it.

The vote was on party lines, not on who received money from the communications folks.

The average amount given to Republicans who voted yes is $137,908 over their careers. The average amount given to Democrats who voted no is $131,788. There is not a correlation on money.

So you're saying this was a vote for less government intrusion by the party of small government?

VERY doubtful given their records.

And more high profile and recent legislative activity suggests that neither of them are inclined to go with the Trumpy bloc, which could be more damaging to them

You're apologizing for them with excuses (it's called apologetics, Catholics have mastered this)

Honestly
I hope you're not suggesting that lobby money had NOTHING to do with the outcome..?

and I also hope you're not suggesting that these politicians voted on this simply because they were told to so
Because it sounds like that's what you're suggesting
The result of the POTUS election has made intelligent people become complete idiots. You're one of them Cleets. No apologies, simply saying your smear tactics don't work on everyone. You're too smart to be doing this and it's really sad to see.

Keep trying to read something into my post that isn't there. All I'm saying is the vote was on party lines and not on who got money from the communications lobby. They ALL get money pretty equally from this group and there is no correlation between the money and the vote.

Sure. But there's still a strong correlation between money and getting the desired outcome which is really what matters.

The lobby paid the same amount to the yeas and the nays. Explain how they paid for the vote.

And I'm not sure what you don't believe, but you're certainly entitled to your OPINION.

They can't hedge their bets? They don't play both sides?

They spent x amount of money and got it passed. Many corporations are apolitical. Political outcomes follow donations far more than they follow the desire of the voters. This is old news and I'm surprised anyone is still willing to argue it.

They orchestrated it themselves. YOU posted, "find the democrat"... we found them, on the same list. You were just too lazy to actually read the article and maybe click one or two more levels down to see they accepted the same money. The fact that they voted against doesn't mean they have higher standards. Just find an issue where Dems all voted yea on a measure and I'm sure you could do this just in reverse. I do not apologize for the R's or the D's, just pointing out that the money had nothing to do with this. If the R's had received a bunch of money that the D's didn't, you might have a point. But that's not the case.

Okay...
So all the Republicans got together collectively of their own volition
and agreed to vote the same on this because it seems like good legislation
