Even if many or most cars continue to function, we will still be in a dire situation because our grid structure is definitely vulnerable. Scientists have estimated that the solar flare in 1859 (Carrington event) would have fried all unshielded electronics on the exposed side of the earth. It was magnitudes larger than any expected man-made EMP events. Our grid is based on a series of large transformers, for which we have no backups. If they get fried its lights out for 6 months to a year at best.

But maybe you'll be able to drive your Lexus to the empty looted Trader Joes

The point, which you are avoiding, is that if the event of an EMP, you may be able to get someplace safe in a vehicle.

That said, the streets will be chaos and i'll be running people over trying to get to my kid.

I simply don't factor automobiles into the equation when I think about the issue

In fact, I work under the assumption that most of them WILL be fried, because working under the assumption they won't is more dangerous

In reality, if most cars did get fried that would work greatly to my advantage- it would make it harder for the troglodytes to range far from the cities looking to grab my food

The solar activity thing concerns me as well. In fact I've thought about trying to store water and non perishable food sufficient to sustain myself and those close to me for three months because when you read about the potential at places like http://science.howstuffworks.com/solar- ... onics2.htm it creates the impression that it could be total chaos for a long time if you're in the wrong place. But then I think that if it did happen people would be very desperate and figure out that you have stuff so it might not matter.

I also have a hard time assessing the risk that you could actually find yourself in a situation where you'd need to have stored food and water in order to survive.

Start thinking about how you're going to get from place to place because anything solid state (I.e., engines) won't run, so you and 95% of Americans will be on foot...
