The solar activity thing concerns me as well. In fact I've thought about trying to store water and non perishable food sufficient to sustain myself and those close to me for three months because when you read about the potential at places like http://science.howstuffworks.com/solar- ... onics2.htm it creates the impression that it could be total chaos for a long time if you're in the wrong place. But then I think that if it did happen people would be very desperate and figure out that you have stuff so it might not matter.

I also have a hard time assessing the risk that you could actually find yourself in a situation where you'd need to have stored food and water in order to survive.
Start thinking about how you're going to get from place to place because anything solid state (I.e., engines) won't run, so you and 95% of Americans will be on foot...
I am assuming that if a worse case scenario arises where I live there will be no getting from place to place. The survival plan would have to be one that involves having what you need to survive without having to move around much. It would be total chaos. Nobody would know what is going on. All of a sudden there would be no electronic anything including communication. I guess it would filter down eventually. But you'd basically have to be prepared to be really miserable for a few months while you survive on stored water and non perishable food. I guess if you could supplement that if you could kill some things, catch fish, etc. But then you'd have to make sure you had something to cook them with. And tens or maybe even hundreds of millions of people depending on the scope wouldn't make for a real good hunter-gatherer type of situation.

Read "One Second After" to get a good feel for what would happen. THAT book caused me to become a quasi-prepper......

i never heard of the book but this situation is one of those where you kind of have to ask whether or not there's anything you can do to really make a risk/benefit case for trying to prepare. It would take a lot of effort to prepare. And then if you did prepare it looks like the chances are pretty good that you'd be screwed anyway. I mean in the context of a situation where if you do prepare there are going to be a lot of desperate people out there who didn't. It looks a lot like a likely no win situation.

It's a lot more than 95%. More like 99.9 and a bunch of other 9s to the right of the decimal point %. People aren't preparing for a massive widespread power outage cause by solar activity any more than they are preparing for an asteroid strike.

To me one factor in deciding whether to prepare for it or not depends on where you live. If you live in a place where there are a bunch of other people around the scenario is going to be you are going to have food and a bunch of other people who are desperate are probably going to figure out that you have it. If you are living in miles from anybody else in Alaska and you are used to preparing for months without replenishing your provisions anyway you probably don't even need to make any preparations.

And what about potable water. There are a ton of tough guys, armed and loaded, with a year's supply of pork and beans, hooked up to a city water supply. A few cases of aqufina will get you a week at best before you have to leave the bunker.

More like 99%. Just type in a web search with "3 million preppers" and all kinds of links will pop up from within the last 5 years claiming 3 million preppers. Certainly not only in the thousands like 99. + a whole bunch of 9s. Its is a booming, multi billion dollar a year industry's Yes it has dropped since Trump was elected, but it habs't dropped THAT much..

NG poll in 2012 of over 1k preppers listed 7 different things people were prepping for. Asteroid strike wasn't one of them so it would fall under the 8th category "other". 37% said they preparing for a "significant blackout", while "other" only had 13%..

Yeah, that's not what the question is asking at all.
1. Which of the following, if any, do you think might happen in the United States in the next 25 years?
Please choose all that apply.
The highest response is major earthquake.

I think a major earthquake might happen in the next 25 years. Am I prepping for one? No.

It's not polling "preppers" - it's polling the nation at large.

The question is whether as many were preparing for an asteroid strike as they are for a wide spread power outage as JSO claimed..I think more would be preparing for a grid failure than asteroid because the odds of a solar EMP (like 1859 Carrington) or a nuke EMP knocking out the grid/or a large chunk of it, are probably a lot higher than an asteroid hitting that had as devastating of an effect on the US.
