Which famine? Irish or Great? The Irish Famine of the 1740s (maybe 50s, I forget) killed more people (proportionally).

Maybe they should've diversified their crops and grown something like Flax. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:
Or prayed themselves some more potatoes. :coffee:

You may remember the classic lines from Godfather I:

Jack Woltz: I don't care how many dago Guinea wop greaseball goombahs come out of the woodwork.

Tom Hagen: I'm German-Irish.

Jack Woltz: Well, let me tell you something, my kraut-mick friend.

The Brits exported food during both famines; however, my grandmother's (born 1901) parents lived during the Great Famine, and they told my grandmother about the Brits' misdeeds, and then she in turn told me. So I have names and faces that I can attach to those accounts.

We should never forget that the British were an illegal occupying force in Ireland, and that the Brits engaged in atrocities against the Irish. We should never let the Brits get away with the fabrication that this was religious strife. That's bull. The causes of unrest in Ireland were purely political and the result of an illegal occupation. It just so happened that the occupiers were Protestants and in land populated by Catholics. That doesn't make the struggle one over religion.
I know the famine should be better categorized as a genocide. Thanks for the lesson, Joe. What would we do with out you?

You repeat that and I'll have my father's neighbors place a part of an equine in your bed while you sleep.

So true story. My dad's family lived in Bayonne, NJ. A kid lived across the street by the name of John DiGilio. My dad knew him and was friendly with him, but my dad was a few years older. But he was the same age as my uncle, and they were really tight growing up and through high school.

Johnny Dee, as he became known, went on to become one of the most powerful mafioso types in New Jersey -- essentially the go-to guy who controlled the whole of the solid waste industry in NJ. Tony Soprano, it is said, was modeled in part on John DiGilio, in that Soprano fictitiously controlled solid waste in NJ.

So, I'm serving as an intern for a court after my first year of law school. It just so happens that DiGilio is going to go on trial in September before the judge for whom I'm working that summer. I'm there a few days when there is a pre-trial hearing to be held before the judge. So I go into the courtroom with the law clerks, and I sit with them on the side of the bench. We're just waiting for the hearing to start.

The door from the chambers open, and the judge's secretary says, loud enough I guess for everyone to hear, that there is a call for me, and she says my name. I've only been there a few days, so she's not really sure who I am.

"That's for me," I said and I get up to take the call.

Just then, DiGilio -- having heard my name -- says to me in gruff voice, "Hey, are you X's son, or Y's son?" Again, this is said loud enough for everyone to hear. Now all of a sudden, everyone is looking at me, with troubled and curious looks on their faces.

So I say, "Y's son."

"Well, you tell your dad I said hello."

"Sure, will."

As it turned out, Johnny Dee beat the rap later that year, but this didn't turn out to be a good thing. Shortly thereafter, he famously went missing, only to be discovered weeks later floating in lake, in a body bag -- the only source of identification being a credit card stuck between his legs.

The Mafia often leaves a message with the victim, related to whatever code he broke. Apparently they were making a point that a loyal mafioso must use credit wisely?

You do realize The Troubles were a political, not religious, conflict? Great Britain's occupation of Northern Ireland was an illegal aggression and, in itself, an act of war.

Of course, the Irish outsmarted the Brits with the Good Friday accords, allowing the six northern counties to decide by referendum with which country to align (knowing that within two generations, the Irish population will outnumber the descendants of the British occupiers).

Religious vs political. Is there really a difference?

Brit authorities have some splainin to do...

Father & both brothers have been arrested with Al Qaeda & ISIS links. In addition:

"...A Muslim community worker has said that members of the public called the police anti-terrorism hotline warning about the Manchester suicide bomber’s extreme and violent views several years ago.

It is also understood that Abedi was in Manchester earlier this year when he told people of the value of dying for a cause and made hardline statements about suicide operations and the conflict in Libya.

The community worker – who did not want to be identified – said two people who knew Salman Abedi at college made separate calls to the police.

They had been worried that “he was supporting terrorism” and had expressed the view that “being a suicide bomber was OK.”

The friends had argued with him, telling him he was wrong but had become so concerned they contacted the police....."

Well in that some political ideologies have adherents that are religious in their fanaticism - it is at least partially true

That Jon should bring it up is fitting

lol. The Unionists and Nationalists were fighting over politics, not religion. Religion plays a huge role in the conflict, no doubt. The history of Ulster/N. Ireland is rooted in a mixture of religion/politics.

But there is a difference. As you know.
