Harvard Wouldn't Like Most People Here
Gotta get Ivy's feed on this - Harvard's revoked the acceptances of at least 10 previously approved applicants based upon their participation in an online message group that included the posting of potentially offensive memes. Not content with eliminating dissent or potentially triggering views on campus, Harvard's now trying to make sure those folks never even make it to campus in the first place.

Hey kalm, I watched the 30 for 30 on the Kirkland team winning the LLWS in 1982. I'm kinda surprised I don't really remember that event as it was a big deal and something I probably would have watched. The big pitcher ended up playing ball at EWU for a year. Must have been around the time you were there?kalm wrote:Well you don't see the Harvard of the Palouse pulling these speech nazi shenanigans.

Little brats got exactly what they deserved. Free speech! Yeah! Guess what, Einsteins, it has consequences.Students inside the group were sharing memes and images that made fun of sexual assault, the Holocaust, and the deaths of the children, according to the student publication. The messages also included jokes about ethnic or racial groups, and one person called the imaginary hanging of a Mexican child “piñata time.”

It's a private school not a city community college...

Yeah, these kind of postings prevent you from getting hired from a job or get you fired. Not the brightest bulbs.

From the article, it said, in order to gain admittance to the private group chat, that they first had to post something in the public chat for everyone to see that would be equal to what they would post in the private chat (basically proving their worth, if you will). If it was solely private, I'd be inclined to agree with you. Where it's murky is that they didn't pull the acceptances of everyone who did this, only a few. How did they decide who would be the sacrificial lambs and who wouldn't?89Hen wrote:In a private group chat? So the posts that got them in trouble were those first posts in the public chat? Or are you saying by posting something like "Can't wait until fall." in the public to gain access made a liar out of them?GannonFan wrote:From the article, it said, in order to gain admittance to the private group chat, that they first had to post something in the public chat for everyone to see that would be equal to what they would post in the private chat (basically proving their worth, if you will). Re: Harvard Wouldn't Like Most People Here
I'm just gleaning from the article - they had to prove their mettle in the public forum with an off-color meme that was considered worthy to get into the private group, where there would be plenty more postings. They apparently then sent letters to those involved that they knew they were involved and that they had to fess up on what they had posted privately. Some did, some didn't. Some got acceptances retracted, others didn't.89Hen wrote:So the posts that got them in trouble were those first posts in the public chat? Does anyone actually trust that the memes were really over the line? This is a pantywaist Ivy League school we're talking about. What they consider over the line and what most people consider over the line are completely different.
"Making fun of sexual assault" for all we know could be making fun of the "teach men not to rape" silliness.
This stuff - along with many other things - are a reason I am not overly impressed whenever I meet someone with an Ivy League degree.

Re: Harvard Wouldn't Like Most People Here
Not totally clear how Harvard admissions people "ferreted out" the identity of the second-level kids that it eventually terminated. My take on this is is that Harvard's overweening self-regard had something to do with it: the precious little overachievers that we accept would never get involved in something as anti-PC as that. Leave those riff-raff to Penn and Cornell. With a 5.2% acceptance rate and a large waiting list, they'll find others to fill those slots if they have to.
I'm beyond caring about stuff like this. Harvard's in my rear-view mirror. I haven't sent the school a dime since 2005, and politics has a lot to do with it.

Maybe they're just trying to make sure they don't have a Yale snowflake episode.

Did you know? GSU plays football in FBS.
Did you know ? GSU has the world's largest tick collection.
Ivy League schools have neither of these
