Privatize National Park Service

Good idea? I need some limited government conks to convince me that it might be. I'm listening...

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said the National Park Service could address its $11 billion backlog of maintenance projects by turning services over to private companies.

"As the secretary, I don't want to be in the business of running campgrounds," Zinke told members of the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. "My folks will never be as good as you are."

"We are going to have more public-private partnerships soon," he said during the luncheon. "I think that's where the industry should be going."

At the same time, NPS plans to overhaul the roles and responsibilities of its workforce.

"We'll be looking at where our employees should be spending their time," he said. "Yes, cleaning the bathrooms. But actually running services, that's something we should be pushing to somebody who's updated and knows the market better."

in terms of the stewardship of the parks Im OK with them staying under gov control

But in terms of service/customer service- the government is the worst possible caretaker

Id be perfectly ok with opening the campgrounds and tour operations to the private sector

Eh. I'd rather there be no established campgrounds or "tour operations" than some McDonalds Park Ranger. Have stewardship but have only backcountry camping and no "tour operations." Take out the roads while you're at it. Make the wilderness wilderness again. Edward Abbey ftw.

Eh. I'd rather there be no established campgrounds or "tour operations" than some McDonalds Park Ranger. Have stewardship but have only backcountry camping and no "tour operations." Take out the roads while you're at it. Make the wilderness wilderness again. Edward Abbey ftw.

The whole idea behind the concept of national parks is accessibility to the public. I agree with a minimalist, noninvasive approach - but if we close them off that much then they're just inaccessible Federal land

Yes, the political environment has improved so much as business and political elites become entrenched in their positions of power. Who knows, maybe the rejection of Clinton and the eventual toppling of Trump will help clear the air. I'm not counting on it, there's always someone else of similar ilk to fill the void, but who knows.
