But we can't have nice things because other people aren't responsible.

And to suggest otherwise is sexist, racist, homophobic, nativist and a whole host of 'ists. :tothehand:

Btw, my grandmother would make some killer fried squash. Bread it, spice it, and fry it. The Southern way!

Agreed. Same with Social Security and Medicare. Want to take it away? Fine. Give me back my contributions plus reasonable interest. No problem.
Without SS and Medicare, elder poverty goes up and assisted living and skilled nursing become unaffordable for most. My mom is on the cusp of needing to move into a skilled nursing unit. She's done very well for herself and doesn't qualify for Medicare so it's going to be $9,000 per month.

I wish we could snap our fingers and have everyone be as fiscally respomsible as her but that's not reality. Without entitlements, some of you will have ma and pa move in with you and you'll be admisterimg meds, feeding tubes, breathing devices and helping them bathe and get dressed. Best of luck!

For those who can afford Assisted Living care, you'll have more old homeless bodies lying on the sidewalk to kick out of the way.

Ahh. Squash's cousin.

No. :tothehand:

When at a restaurant and they say the side is a "vegetable medley", I always ask what it is. If I hear squash and zucchini, I pass. It's a cheap-ass alternative to broccoli and cauliflower, IMO.
I'm OK with eggplant, but the MW(b) wops don't do it well. :ohno:

I'm fighting the same battle now.

BTW, I think you mean Medicaid, not Medicare.

I agree with kalm on this one. As my dearly departed Jewish step-grandmother-in-law (yup, that's a thing) said to me when Dubya was talking about privatizing Social Security, yes, many people would benefit from using their smarts and other advantages and would do much better than the current system if they could control their own money, but for every one of them there's at least another person who would royally screw it up and, come to retirement and old age, would be dead broke and absolutely screwed. Or, if they didn't screw it up, had some type of crazy event in their life (major illness, natural disaster, etc) that would screw it up for them. You can libertarian all you want, but when it comes to possibly tens of millions of Americans in dire poverty and lacking any means to recover, it's not going to be a society that will last very long.

My parents just did a trust on all their property and made my sister and me co-trustees. That will keep the Gubmint from taking their home(s) away before they can suck Medicaid dry.

For a couple of liberals, I give them credit for listening to their smart son!

My parents are already bleeding Medicare. I was referring to Medicaid. Not sure if you were replying to me though.

Mostly agree, but the US did last for its 1st 150 or so years with SS, and about 180ish years without medicaid & medicare..

True, but I'm guessing that 1) elder poverty rates were much higher, 2) end of life care was much poorer, and 3) we were culturally different and more accepting of our roles in providing care for our parents. Aint no time for that these days...

MAGA!

Let's go back to bleeding people if they have a medical problem.

George Washington had a sore throat and they bled him to death. It's cheap!

Agreed. They could keep the employer matching. I'd be willing to remove myself from the system for 1/2 of what me and my employers contributed...

True life expectancy was shorter and more elderly lived with or close to their children. Families were bigger and more people tended to grow up and live in the same area their entire lives..

The typical old farm house in Slower DE had three floors. Kids lived on top floor, parents on second, and grandparents and any tards/head bumpers stayed on the first deck.
