Trump is not a man of character
Goldberg doesn't have any new revelations here, pretty much everything he writes is obvious
But I enjoyed this article for the tie-in on Reagan the politician, and how the loyalty he garnered from a wide range of political ideologues is what Trump would like to have, but cannot inspire (because he's basically bereft of character)
http://www.nationalreview.com/g-file/44 ... r-revealed
"The second thing is the more bitter pill. The president of the United States really just isn’t a very good person. There is no definition of good character that he can meet. You certainly can’t say he’s a man of good character when it comes to sexual behavior. His adulterous past is well-documented. You can’t say he models decency in the way he talks. He’s not honest (you can look it up). He brags about whining his way to winning. He boasts of double-crossing business partners. If you want to say he’s charitable, you should read up on how he used his “charities” as leverage or for publicity stunts. I think we can all agree he’s not humble or self-sacrificing. When asked what sacrifices he’s made, in the context of his spat with the Kahn family, he couldn’t name anything save for the fact that he worked very hard to get rich and that he employs people (presumably because it profits him to do so). I don’t know how anyone could absolve him of the charge of vanity or greed. He’s certainly not pious by any conventional definition."

IMPEACH HIM NOW!!! RESIST!!!
All good observations in the article, but as you well know, none of them impeachable offenses...he was elected properly and will serve until the end of his term, or somethig much more serious that "He's a boor, a lout, and embarrassment to the country" comes along
I know, so why was he elected??? If you are still asking that question, then you don't get it and never will...

Agree as well.
But it came down to Trump or Hillary. Nobody talks about the character of the one who lost. I would rather complain about Trump's character now than Hillary's.

Re: Trump is not a man of character
More than Trump insulting a reporter, the most important take-home message about the twitter brouhaha is just how easily Trump is trolled. It's easier for a person like Joe Scarboro to troll Trump than it is to troll Opie on a message board. That, and Trump is obviously pretty easily manipulated by flattery as well.
BTW, just a hunch, but if Obama took a shot at Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity on twitter I'm guessing the liberal poutrage would be 2 or 3 points lower on the Richter scale.

Trump is boorish, and should tone down the twitter, but 3 things I like about him:
-He prevented us from having to refer to Clinton as Madam President for 4-8 years.
-Gorsuch instead of Garland, and likely 1-2 (insert your originalist judge here) instead of (insert your liberal, judicial activist judge here). (Plus doz of citcuit court judge vacancies that will be filled).

Hillary Clinton being the Democrat candidate was a significant factor. But what I'm talking about is looking at it from the beginning when Trump entered the race. Very soon thereafter we learned that all of the stereotypes about the Republican base being hateful and ignorant are true.93henfan wrote:Yeah, it had nothing to do with the fact that the Dems ran Hillary Clinton, an even more corrupt human than Donald Trump.JohnStOnge wrote:

But we learned during this election cycle that the Republican Party really does have a problem with its base. They can't be reasonable because that's not going to fly with that hateful, ignorant core they've got.

Re: Trump is not a man of character
I know you're trolling but I just heard reports on both NPR and CNN today of a newly issued study concluding that it wasn't the economy. Then I saw Fareed Zakaria talking about it and referencing a couple of studies while referencing his column at https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... 79e2b40ddf.HI54UNI wrote:Don't forget the economy.93henfan wrote:

Some language from the column:
That's consistent with what I've been saying exit polling showed for months now. Any rational person looking at that exit polling knows that Trump didn't get elected because of the economy. He got elected because there's a core of people who don't like illegal immigration and who are very concerned about terrorism. Additionally, he got 80% of the White Evangelical Christian vote. The fact that he got a higher percentage of that vote than George W. Bush, John McCain, or Mitt Romney got tells you...or SHOULD tell you if you're being rational...that cultural issues played a huge role. Stuff like those White Evangelical Christians seeing the Supreme Court foist homosexual marriage upon States that didn't want it, the transgender bathroom stuff, etc.The Public Religion Research Institute and the Atlantic also conducted an important study to analyze the most powerful predictors of whether a white working-class American would vote for Trump. The top predictor was if someone identified as a Republican, a reminder that party loyalty is very strong. But after that, the two best predictors were “fears of cultural displacement” and support for deporting undocumented immigrants. Those who felt their economic conditions were poor or fair were actually slightly more likely to vote for Hillary Clinton.
The idea that Trump won because of the economy is a total myth. Again: ALL of the polling before the election, the exit polling, and polling since the election shows that people who considered the economy as highly important to their decision voted majority Clinton. And I'll say that again even though I know you were just trolling.
I guess it doesn't really matter if people continue to believe something that isn't true. But the idea that Trump won because of the economy just isn't true. He won because of the kinds of stuff about Republican voters that Democrats like to stereotype Republican voters on.
