We're talking probably less than five total miles of lifeguarded beaches: Rehoboth about ten blocks, same for Dewey, even less for Bethany, and then about 200 yards each at Cape Henlopen, Delaware Seashore (x2 lifeguarded areas) and Fenwick Island State Parks. We're talking maybe a couple of percent of the ocean shoreline guarded in the state, and that is for four months.
Here you are quoting facts while I'm just trying to work a "my kindred souls in lower DE" into a post

I found a site that says the lifeguard expenses for Dewey in 2011 was $320K and it comes from the city budget.
The 2010 census population for Dewey was 341. :suspicious:

Exactly. So what's New Jersey's excuse for fleecing everyone?

You may want to research how much all those rental property owners and hotels are paying Dewey in taxes.

Btw, perhaps the stupidest quote I'll read today was in the article Flaggy posted:
“Nowhere on the beach is not covered. They don’t have any incidents or problems like that,” Smith said.

Dewey Beach property owner Lisa Levine disagreed. She said there was a problem on Carolina Street, when a man suffered a spinal injury on the beach.
So a lifeguard is supposed to warp at the speed of light to cushion the blow of some old dipshit who can't handle waves to save his neck?

I bet that dumb cunt and the old guy with the broken neck were both from New Jersey.

I just noticed that Seaside Heights enacted a 3% hotel tax this year. Prior to that there was no tax.

It's a matter of the number of people you serve. Like the number of ATM's in a city versus a desert.

I grew up going to the beaches OBX (late 70s-early 80s), Emerald Isle (mid 80s'), OBX again (Duck, where my parents had a timeshare, 87'-94' and as an adult 04'-09'). I never remembered seeing lifeguards on any of the beaches were at except for in Duck down the beach (I believe that was a private stand for the huge development down the beach from us). Were relatively crowded places in the summer and the lack of lifeguards never seemed to be a deterrent on the crowds. And there weren't any ropes, flags etc telling you where you can/can't swim. Also was at Waves 11' and Salvo 12', definitely no lifeguard stands within sight.

Is there a high % of guidos in NJ beaches who can't swim?

A few weeks ago I struck up a conversation with a life guard on Hilton Head Island and she basically told me they worked for a company that has a contract with the resort and had minimal training and were basically there to make money renting out beach chairs and umbrellas.

If there was a child caught in a rip current I'm pretty sure it would've been much better to send me out there to get them than to send some cutesy, lean 19ish-year-old female whose body is significantly weaker, less buoyant, and probably less suitable for movement in the water in every way.

Totally different story with the lifeguards up here. They are incredibly competent. Many are multi-year veterans and they have some very big competitions between the various towns' beach patrols. If you saw them work and train, you'd be impressed. I had two teachers in school who were Rehoboth beach patrol and they were tough mofos.

In summer 2011 family was staying at Waves in the OBX. Girlfriend and I think were in Ocracoke for the day so weren't present, but my mom, brother, sister in law, niece & nephew were apparently 30-40 yards down the beach from where a guy drowned. Guy was apparently part of a family group of 16 from OH. I remember them on the beach the day prior- drinking and having a good time..

If you're not aware of the power of the ocean, you really shouldn't mess with it. Biggest surf I've ever personally been in was surfing 15 footers during an epic west swell in '98 in LaJolla CA. Actually, make that 15 footer (singular). I'm an experienced surfer and it still took me somewhere around 20 minutes of nonstop paddling and duck diving to get out to the lineup. Then an even bigger set came in and everyone paddled their balls off to get even farther out of the impact zone. These things looked like computer generated imagery from The Perfect Storm. I barely got over the lip of four or five walls in a row. Looking back down into them, they looked like 50 footers instead of 15. I finally turned around on one, actually made the turn (thank you Jesus and baby Jesus), rode it for about a half mile, made it up out of the cove before getting killed by the next big set, and went the fuck home.

The Southern Ocean is kind of fascinating to me. Nothing to stop the winds so they just whip around and around Antarctica. And of course it's colder than WaGriz in December.
