Do you think this was Donald's or Tillerson's idea - or do you think it was floated by Lavrov/Putin, and embraced surprisingly well by Trump?
I think Trump gave lip service to it, if they ever start working on it I will be surprised.

It will never happen.

This is an example of something sounding good on its surface to Trump, and him crowing about it before thinking it through

I expect we'll be walking back from this one fairly quickly

An example of sounding good in a meeting with no advisors to tell you it's a bad idea. If Fiona Hill or McMaster had been allowed to attend - this idea would have been squashed immediately.

It isn't a matter of Trump thinking it through - it's a matter of his advisors explaining to him what an awful idea it is.

And, I agree... no way in hell it happens.

I think Trump is giving regular lip service to Putin, if you know what we mean, and we think you do..

:suspicious:
WASHINGTON — President Trump had a second, previously undisclosed, private conversation with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia this month, the White House acknowledged on Tuesday, raising new questions about their relationship as the cloud of Russia investigations continues to shadow the Trump administration.

The hourlong conversation in Hamburg, Germany, took place at a private dinner among world leaders at a concert hall on the banks of the Elbe River during the Group of 20 economic summit meeting, with only a Kremlin interpreter present to listen to the exchange. It followed a formal meeting between the two presidents that lasted more than two hours earlier in the day, and included their foreign ministers for a fraught discussion about Moscow’s attempts to interfere in the 2016 American elections.

In the earlier meeting, Mr. Trump questioned the Russian president about his role in the American vote. Mr. Putin denied his involvement, and the two men agreed to move beyond the dispute in the interest of finding common ground on other matters, including a limited cease-fire in Syria.

But the intimate dinner conversation, of which there is no official United States government record, because no American official other than the president was involved, is the latest to raise eyebrows. Foreign leaders who witnessed it later commented privately on the oddity of an American president flaunting such a close rapport with his Russian counterpart.

“Pretty much everyone at the dinner thought this was really weird, that here is the president of the United States, who clearly wants to display that he has a better relationship personally with President Putin than any of us, or simply doesn’t care,” said Ian Bremmer, president of the Eurasia Group, a New York-based research and consulting firm, who said he heard directly from attendees. “They were flummoxed, they were confused and they were startled.”

Flummox and confused are synonyms. I hate when people do that.

Flummoxed and confused has been the continual default stance of European leaders since 1912.

Is it really that big of a deal that Trump and Putin had a private conversation?

For an hour... with no American translator, notetaker, advisor, anything...

After already having a 2 1/2 hour meeting earlier in the day that was supposed to be 30 minutes.

3 1/2 hours :suspicious:

I don't know if it's "that big of a deal"... but, it is sketchy as fuck.

If you back out the time for the Russian translator, it's probably closer to 6.93 minutes.

I've had numerous formal meetings with groups followed by informal more intimate meetings where the real nuts and bolts get worked out. I'm not saying that's how international diplomacy should be carried out but it also doesn't seem all that unrealistic.

Yeah, I'm not saying anything terrible or scandalous happened in the meeting.

If it happened in a vacuum or it was with Macron or someone... it would hardly be worth noting.

No its not. Not with all the leaks. MSM and the left are just pissy about the meeting being done in secret so there won't be the leaks that the msm can attack Trump with.

I said on the Russia thread that because of the leaks Trump needed to have more unrecorded meetings conducted in secret with a smaller # of people present..

Well, on second thought... it doesn't seem Trump is in need of a translator.
