Hundreds of thousands protest in Iran, mourn dead

Post by dbackjon »

Hundreds of thousands of protesters wearing black and carrying candles filled the streets of Tehran again Thursday, joining opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi to mourn demonstrators killed in clashes over Iran's disputed election.

The massive protest openly defied Iran's supreme leader, despite a government attempt to placate Mousavi and his supporters by inviting the reformist and two other candidates who ran against hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to a meeting with the country's main electoral authority. Mousavi and his followers allege Ahmadinejad stole the election.

Many in the huge crowd carried black candles and lit them as night fell. Others wore green wristbands and carried flowers in mourning as they filed into Imam Khomeini Square, a large plaza in the heart of the capital named for the founder of the Islamic Revolution, witnesses said.

Press TV, an English-language version of Iranian state television designed for foreigners, estimated the crowd at hundreds of thousands and said the people listened to a brief address from Mousavi, who called for calm and self-restraint.

A Mousavi Web site said that the crowd exceeded 1 million.

Independent witnesses said that, based on previous demonstrations at the site, the size of the crowd appeared to be in the hundreds of thousands. Foreign news organizations are barred from reporting on Tehran's streets.

I hope some of these people are twittering as this would be an interesting way to get some interesting information that would be worth seeing. I now have found two valid uses for the phenomenon.

I think that's how Hillary broke her elbow...

...rushing back to her State office to call Ahmahnutjob and congratulate him on stealing the election...

John Kerry has now stated that only neo-conservatives are backing the protesters.....????

So now are we led to believe that the "peaceful, liberty-loving" liberals in America are not supporting the efforts of the Iranian people to revolt and claim their independence? Is Obama, aka "friend of the world", now not gonna champion THEIR cause? His silence speaks volumes and even he is stupid to not know the difference in what he calls "meddling" and supporting the oppressed. From one Muslim to another, he loves Ahmidenejad and there is no denying this.

Let's see, since January, Obama has pissed off
a) the anti-war crowd who wanted the troops home the day after he was sworn in
b) the gays because he has not, and will not, ever support gay marriage
c) Israel
d) oppressed Muslims who want to shake off their tyrannical government in the name of "hope and change", values that SUPPOSEDLY he himself endorses, and yet their cries of falling on deaf ears here in America.

By January 2012, Obama will be further left than Chavez, Castro, Mao and Hitler combined. Remember America, you voted his sorry ass into the white house. ONE FUCKING TERM!!!!!!! BOOK IT BABY!!!!!!!!

cat man are you freaking daft?

lemme splain somethin to ya...

Obama does anything more than he is currently doing toward Iran, and he gives the forces of repression there something to leverage against the protesters. it gives them a reason to tie Mousavi to the US and rally the coutry round the flag.

Obama is handling this situation as well as he can... the only people who seem to object, are shameless neocons who want Ahmadi to return to power for their own domestic agenda. fact is... there is nothing the Americans to do to effect the outcome positively. we need to do what we've been doing.
