Maybe the BLM folk and their ilk can open satellite offices up and down the coast of Western Africa. Once there, they can terrorize the ancestors of the people who hunted down and sold their ancestors into slavery. :ugeek:

Sweet Moses, 56 things. Why do we name so many things after people? I realize he was a Senator for more than half a century (or close to it) but yikes, that's a whole lot for what was essentially a career politician. I'm sure, however, that he's not alone in that regard.

Trump was correct in asking the question-

But there's a LOT of distance between some fringe nuts on social media saying the Washington and Jefferson monuments should come down, and having it actually happen

This is why social media is poison - in the past, these people were street preachers that you would cross the street to avoid

Now they get an air of legitimacy by retweet

There are pretty good polls out there showing that majorities do not support the removal of monuments - and it is a close affair even when it comes to confederate ones

At the end of the day, all these people are doing is cementing votes for Trump in 2020

The lack of humor on the left can be so annoying. :coffee:

All they need to do is fasten brass plaques to the Confederate statues that say "You lost. Get over it." Or "This chump supplied ass for the biggest whuppin in our nation's history."
You matter. Unless you multiply yourself by c squared. Then you energy.

Where Trump fails is that he can never eloquently wade into any position. Yes, he's correct for asking the question, but then he fans the flames further by his inelegant way of addressing the question. And yes, that matters.

And yes, I think social media is exacerbating this, but a careless media does as well, as well as our horrible education in history in this country. Take Taney for instance - most people have no idea what the Dred Scott decision was, and even more people have no idea what Taney did for the other 80 some years of his life. When the first statue of him went down in Baltimore, it was one of 4 statues and the media said that 4 Confederate statues were removed. When the statue of him in Annapolis came down last night it was slightly corrected to say that a hero of the Confederacy was removed. Neither of those statements is necessarily correct. Taney never was a Confederate - he stayed as the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court through the war until his death. As for the hero of the Confederacy, the only way you could say that was because of his admittedly terrible decision in the Dred Scott Case. Of course, Taney was also on the right side of history in the Amistad case (yes, the one the movie was based on) and Taney was also on the right side of history when he, as Attorney General under Jackson (probably a knock against him though since Jackson is a pariah now) helped to forment the government's response to Calhoun and the Nullification Crisis and held the Union together. Oh, and Taney inherited slaves and he, rather early, freed every single one of them.

Should there be statues to Taney? I don't know. But I do know that we should at least take some time thinking about it and debating it rather than having politically expedient mayors and governors work in the middle of the night to quickly do something that will curry favor with whatever political wind they think is blowing at the time. We shouldn't be afraid of discussing history, with all of its warts and nuances and complications. This would mean we need to think further than the 140 character limit in Twitter or the hilariously funny meme that can boil down an issue so much that all semblance of thought it removed from the discussion. But it's still something we should do.

We need to rename New York as it was named after a slave trader...

Ford Motor Company must be renamed as Henry Ford was a Nazi sympathizer and received a medal from Hitler...

I did a quick check yesterday of the 100 statues the states have submitted and are in the US Capitol Building (each state gets to send two statues of two of it's current or past citizens). If you factor in either white supremacy (and for the 1800's crowd or earlier that could be anyone who thought Blacks were inferior), slave holders, people who negatively impacted Native Americans, people who may have had a negative impact on the environment, then easily 60 of those 100 statues will need to come down, and probably even more than that. A lot of cleaning up to do.

JFK should be next. He wrote about Hitler in his diary

Hitler “had boundless ambition for his country which rendered him a menace to the peace of the world, but he had a mystery about him in the way he lived and in the manner of his death that will live and grow after him,” Kennedy wrote. He observed that Hitler “had in him the stuff of which legends are made” and predicted that “within a few years Hitler will emerge from the hatred that surrounds him now as one of the most significant figures who ever lived.”

Plus JFK's old man was a jew hating Nazi sympathizer so he's guilty by association that way too.

Automobiles are next. A lady selling condos at the site of the former Ford plant in St Paul was asked about parking, as there appeared to be very little of it. She replied that there were discouraging cars. Ironic as it is, St Paul and Minneapolis are really into this push for bicycles. 3 lane streets have been reduced to 2 lanes and a bike lane. As much as they say bikes and cars belong on the road together, I'm not buying it. I'll stick to the bike trails that are not part of a street or highway shoulder.

I wasn't making judgments on Trumps moral authority to ask it- just that the question itself is the right one to ask

The problem here is that the underlying issue isn't about history at all- it is about striking out at people you don't like

The fact that monument cleansing runs afoul of real historical understanding stems from exactly the same unintelligible forces that have the feminist movement in bed with the foulest islamists-

The logic makes sense if you look at it through a certain lens- and one lens only-

It has nothing to do with history, logic, or common sense. It has everything to do with simply opposing "those people over there"

BTW, since Hitler is getting mentioned so much I'll take this opportunity to mention that he's not the single most evil dictator in history nor is he the greatest mass murderer. Most evil? Maybe tied. But Stalin was at least as bad. Some others too. Mass murder? No contest. Stalin wins.
