NJ was a victim of the one call (or lack thereof) that drives me nuts the most. CT kid got caught in a rundown between 3rd and home and ran well outside the allowable 3 feet to avoid the tag. I have a long history of arguing with umpires on this exact situation. It's amazing to me how often it is screwed up.

One game not two games - it's not a true double-elimination tourney, just like regionals. Either way the only question in my mind will anyone score on NC? Haven't let up a hit yet...
Tonight's game and Thursday's game. 1 + 1 = 2.

OK didn't think you were counting tonight, considering the winner plays tonight too. It's just one extra game's worth of pitchers they losing team throws tomorrow. Keep kids under 35 & they can pitch Saturday. Under 50 they can go Sunday, 51 or more & they're done.

With Ditsworth done for the tournament, so is Texas. They're pretty pedestrian without him on the mound.

I don't see Japan beating the Matthijs kid. 11Ks in a row tonight. Wow. And they have two more capable pitchers after him.

That ump had a very wide outside strike zone for lefty batters.

NC became very conservative on basepaths with the eventual scoring runner in the last inning. Thought he should have continued to 3rd after he took 2nd once the ball went to CF and then should have gone home on the single when he went to 3rd. It all worked out (and there were 0 outs so I understand the conservative play) and they will be a tough out with such great pitching that they have.

Nobody could throw a base like Lou Piniella!

And his dirt- kicking form was pure Scott Norwood!

Weaver had some nice tropes as well. He used to turn his hat around so he could get closer to the ump's face! :notworthy:

For art form, I'd rank them Piniella #1, Weaver #2, Billy Martin #3, Bobby Cox #4, and Jim Leyland #5.

The top three pitchers on the US side threw in last night's game; the two for NC and the one from TX. Good game.
NC is now in the driver's seat.

The difference is TX threw their guy all 85 & he's done now. NC's starter went 50 & can pitch Saturday & the big kid threw low 60's & is eligible Sunday.

Went to Memorial Stadium a few times as a kid. That's actually a good neighborhood for Baltimore.

Southeast is in great shape, both for the US title game and the World Series itself. They'll need a pitcher like that big kid if they're going to have any chance against Japan. Plus, they should be able to hit Japan - I think that's their weak spot, the pitching. Japan fields and hits as well as any team.

I was fine with the conservative running by Southeast in that last inning last night - there were no outs, and they were facing a pitcher they could get a lot of contact against - no point forcing an extra base at that point.

Japan and Mexico it is. Japan clearly the heavy favorite. Impressive that Mexico got back here after losing the first game of the tournament to Latin America.

Bobby Cox is by far the career ejection leader for MLB managers, with 161. Nobody will ever catch him.John McGraw of the early 20th century is a distant #2 at 132. Weaver had just 94, and the fiery Piniella had only 63, behind Ron Gardenhire  with 65.

Yeah, granted I was only a kid and maybe didn't know any better, but I never felt like Memorial Stadium was in a dangerous spot. Plus, it was the 80's, everything was just nicer then.

Lufkin puts the first pitch of the game over the fence. Then the third Texas batter also goes yard.

Yeah, big escape there in the bottom of the first, getting out of runners on the corners with one out. The nips definitely aren't going to quit. It's in their DNA.
