NK fires a ballistic missile over Japan

Post by Vidav »

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/08 ... ecautions/
North Korea fired a missile over Japan last night, officials said, as Tokyo warned citizens in the north of the country to take cover.

Japan's warning system kicked in, advising citizens on its northern Hokkaido island to take precautions, as the missile headed towards land in what was a significant escalation of Kim Jong-un's military posturing.

The missile later broke into three pieces and landed in the sea. It flew for around 1,700 miles, reaching a maximum altitude of 350 miles, South Korean officials said. The Pentagon confirmed the launch.

Not a damn thing anybody's going to do about until they're prepared to see Seoul leveled.

Yeah. But how far do they let North Korea push things before saying enough?

Is Donny still sticking by this or what?
They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen ... he has been very threatening beyond a normal state. They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.

So donny was saying that the US response would be nuclear bombs greater than Nagasaki? After all, the world as seen that. Firebombing greater than Dresden? The World has seen it.

Sure why not. Trump's a windbag and they know it.

Not that anybody previous would've done anything either. But Trump is particularly hilarious because he's SUCH a windbag. Mr. Tough Guy who is really just a huge nothing.

Mr. Super Duper negotiator and deal maker who couldn't even make a deal on health care when his Party controls both Houses of Congress.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

Remember when Trump was unbalanced and going to start WWIII?

I remember a lot of hand wringing over his mouthing off about NK

It's amazing what people choose to believe or disbelieve

Trump is either a windbag or Hitler - he can't be both

Sanctions haven't worked. Displays of force and verbal threats haven't worked. I doubt an ultimatum or unconditional dialogue (see below) would work. China could stop it, but I don't think they really want to - why would they? We're pretty much just going to have one more nuclear nation in the world that we'll have to work into the MAD doctrine.

From a CNN article. Sums it up pretty well:
Reality

After five nuclear tests and two successful launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, most experts believe the opportunity to prevent North Korea from developing a nuclear weapon that could hit the United States has come and gone.

Attempts to take out weapons in North Korea -- where reliable intelligence is scarce -- could be incredibly risky.

"If you attack them after they have the nuclear weapons, it's not a preventive war. It's just a plain old nuclear war," Jeffrey Lewis, a nonproliferation expert at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies' James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, said on a recent podcast.

Even if nuclear weapons aren't used, North Korea's huge artillery stocks could devastate the South Korean capital of Seoul and its surrounding areas. Japan's military likely does not have the capability to forcefully respond without US assistance, as it's a primarily defensive force.

Unconditional dialogue is one of the few remaining options that some North Korea watchers think should be tested.

The current process of clamping down on North Korea is what the country is used to, argues Delury of Yonsei University.

Punishing North Korea for its missile tests -- which the United Nations Security Council has barred it from conducting -- is "the logical counter-reaction but it doesn't change the outcome," Delury said. "You just continue along this trajectory."

"There's just really no good option," Robert Kelly, a professor of political sciences at South Korea's Pusan National University, told CNN.

"If there were, we wouldn't be talking about this every few months. No one knows what to do about North Korea."

The lawful order from the President is the only one-man part of the operation. Every other action in the chain of events is a two-person process. If one of those two hiccups while questioning the legality of the order, that missile won't be going down range.

You just have to hope that the President is getting good advice before he makes his unilateral decision. Even in this White House, I don't think it would ever go down willy nilly. There are still a lot of smart people surrounding the desk in the Oval Office, even if the desk itself is occupied by a spoiled kid.

No way we go nuclear on NK unless they strike the US mainland. Let's face it, NK is a tiny country wedged in between the other two nuclear superpowers. If we drop a missile or bomb that strays into Russia or China, errantly fly into either China or Russia's airspace, or create fallout wafting over either of their countries one or both is in it against us.

The better option, if possible, is to remove Kim with a surgical special teams strike. Problem is, Kim is so paranoid they'd have to get around a half million armed troops just to get to him.

It's either that or nothing. For more than two decades the US has chosen the nothing option. Don't tell me sanctions, we all see how well that worked out.

Yep. I'm not sure that most of his army wouldn't stand aside as foreign troops marched on the palace. 8-)

The personality cult is real. He has legions of loyal soldiers that would fight to the death for him and the regime.
