Can you imagine what the global economy would look like if the U.S. fires an ICBM into Seoul NK

I think you mean Pyongyang.

Though, perhaps Trump is also confused and accidentally requests ICBM for Seoul.

I'm not going let NK destroy SK - I'll do it myself first!

Seoul may be half empty by the time this starts. Hear the migration is towards Busan.

Honestly, we don't know what it would take to change that. It could be that they'd never give up, could be that they roll over with a couple of bombs. Honestly, the only thing holding the people of NK in check is lack of internet access. If they actually saw the outside world, they would overthrow the government in one generation.

Exposing their population to the outside world and deprogramming them would be far more difficult than taking out Kim via special ops. :twocents:

There's no easy solution here and you're right that noone knows. I think Kim is still flexing his muscles and showing off for his populace. I don't think he has intentions of actually bombing Japan, South Korea, or Guam.

I liked Tillerson's response to their launch back in March:
North Korea launched yet another intermediate range ballistic missile. The United States has spoken enough about North Korea. We have no further comment.
Ignoring him is more effective, imo, than giving him attention with "fire and fury" kind of statements.

I've had the unique perspective of sitting through the annual classified op plan war game for NK twice. This was nearly 20 years ago now, and based on NK ability to deliver just a handful of nukes across the DMZ and of course the ability to level Seoul in 15 minutes with conventional munitions (i.e. massive artillery barrage).

Nothing will stop the leveling of Seoul if the order is given. Decapitaing the NK leadership will occur, and the centralized structure of DPRK military would quickly cause it to become dysfunctional (see Iraq army in 1991 and 2003), but regardless of whatever chicken is running around Pyongyang with no head, you better believe a new chicken will quickly arrive on the scene from the north. Call it a Peking Duck if you'd like.

All I know is that I'm getting worried about the Winter Olympics in 2018 and the chance to watch curling for two weeks on national TV, considering that South Korea is hosting these games and Pyeongchang is surely within artillery range of the North.

I say we give them food aid items tainted with bacteria that has an incubation period of several days, which will naturally be given to the North Korean military and not the starving civilians. Then when they're all sick we make our move.

My guess is a good-old fashioned CIA coup takes out Kim Jong-un. We cut some trade deal with China, who gets to put in a puppet. Who cares, then, if it has nukes? China has nukes already and it will control North Korea.

We've been in this current cycle with North Korea since the early 1990's, when we thought they signed a treaty not to make nuclear weapons, only to find out many years later that they had their fingers crossed behind their backs when they signed the treaty. Since then, over multiple presidencies, ignoring them or not ignoring them appears to have had the same, null effect. What happened before the 1990's - I don't seem to remember anyone talking about North Korea much in that mid 1950's to late 1980's time period. Was is just the ability to make nuclear weapons?

HHmmmm. Country run by a lunatic, and his next two generations of himself. Each getting more and more loco.
Yes, who gives a fuck about them without nukes. With them, it's a problem.

Isn't launching a missile over another country an act of war? Who's to say they weren't trying to hit Japan and just missed?

Me thinks ships in international waters is different than actual countries airspace. But go on saying we are guilty of the same somehow.
