$9 billion highway project would widen 3 major Maryland roadways with toll lanes, Hogan says

Post by dbackjon »

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Thursday proposed a $9 billion plan to add express toll lanes to the routes of three of Maryland’s most congested highways — the Interstate 495 Capital Beltway, the I-270 spur connecting Frederick to D.C., and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway between the two cities.

“This problem has been marring the quality of life of Maryland citizens for decades,” Hogan said at a news conference. “Today, we are finally going to do something about it.”

The highway expansions would add two express toll lanes each way to roughly 100 miles of roadways in Maryland’s densely populated central region. Existing lanes on each road would remain free to drivers.

The massive undertaking involves persuading the federal government to give the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, now controlled by the National Park Service, to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

And after compliance with the ridiculous MD environmental regulations, the project will cost $20 billion.

As opposed to all the money wasted on the ICC and soon to be on the Purple Line (the light rail version of the ICC).

Look, what's needed is another Potomac crossing - actually 2, one for cars and one for Metro. Virginia's all for it, but not the People's Republic...

Hah, good one.

At least Virginia has tried to fix their shit sandwich. All you guys got was the useless f'ing ICC.

But don't take my word on it.

Three stretches of highway in the DMV made the list of America’s Top 50 Bottlenecks....

The D.C. metro area first hits the list at #26, with Interstate 395 between Washington Blvd. and the George Washington Parkway...

Another Northern Virginia highway ranks at #41—I-495 at the Dulles Toll Road. And I-395 from Duke St. to halfway between Duke St. and Edsall Road is #44.

It took you all of 4 minutes to go to the googles and type in "Worst Traffic Bottlenecks" or the like and then post it here. I did the same and found a more recent study. You're welcome to post.

If you've ever driven on 495, 270 or 295, you know this is needed. Wondering if dback posted this just because Hogan is a (R). An (R) who supports all his causes, apparently unbeknownst to him.

The Baltimore beltway, I-695, is under constant construction to widen. Even my exit, is getting a second bridge to go from 6 lanes to 10. And if still aint the shit storm in DC.

B'more beltway (west side at least) is always at a dead stop when I've driven it. If I have to go to the Towson area I almost always go 270 to 70.

Notice how where all these idiots go on weekends (DE and MD beaches) is not mentioned as a top bottleneck?

That's because we know how to deal with traffic here. We just don't build giant highways. You want to come here? Two lane roads, motherfuckers! Deal.
