I also read they are grandfathering existing mortgages up to $1 million and all new mortgages have a $500K limit.

Those are reported differences between the Senate & House proposals. We'll get more info today maybe as the Senate may roll out their ideas.

I don’t worry about the tax bill, because this feckless GOP Congress will never pass it. Then the Donks will have a wave election in 2018, Trump will be impeached, and dback and JSO will leave their respective spouses and get married.

I’m actually enjoying this respite from governments that “get things done”.

But ultimately this whole thing needs to be burned to the ground and started over, and the quickest way to do that is give supermajorities to the Donks

Senate version has several differences:
Mortgage deduction stays at $1M
Medical Expense deductions
7 tax brackets
Estate Tax not repealed, but upped to $11M threshold
Corp Tax cut delayed to 2019

So you like Mountains...
There's a a little bump called San Jacinto Peak it's 10,800 feet towering above Palm Springs
It can be hiked and camped - There's a ridge trail that runs about 75 miles along the western slope
that has creeks and ponds and views to the Pacific Ocean on one side and Palm Springs on the other

It's widely considered some of the best mountain hiking in the world
I can see how you might not have noticed it when you were there...

I like keeping the Estate Tax in there - I can't imagine that's an economic drain. I know that pisses off the super rich but that doesn't really bother me.
If we're going to do the corporation tax then we should do that right away - just a gimmick to wait a year - either it's worthwhile to do or it's not (and really, other countries have already made the decision for us that it is).
Keeping the deductions in is just window dressing - if you're going to raise the standard deduct to $24k and eliminate the exemptions and eliminate the SALT deduction then most middle and upper middle won't itemize anyway.

I do not know any middle income people who have anywhere near $500,000 per year of mortgage interest let alone $1,000,000.

I think you need to read up on the constraints that are on Congress to develop this bill. They can't exceed a certain deficit threshold. And this restraint is further complicated by the inability to accurately calculate what the deficit might be. Congress is boxed in by the political system that is in place. We all suffer because of it.
So basicly, they have enough material to build a 3000 sf house, but only enough roof shingles to build a 1500 sf house.

Yes, I know. It's pretty. Still isn't my cup of tea. I can be in the Mountains in 2 hours. Aside from my desire to visit Napa...I don't care to see anymore of California. I've been to LA. I go to San Diego but that's mostly to see a college buddy. Hell, I've spent a month at 29Palms.

THat's a nice peak. I can be here within 2 hours:

Image

Mt. Pisgah isn't a bad hike

Image

Graveyard fields is a favorite of mine - you walk through fields of wild berries before a 2 mile hike that is pretty steep at some points. Image

Still - doesn't detract that I simply prefer something else. Not trying to be smug about it...
