If CA does not allow combustion engine cars to be registered, gas stations will close at a rapid pace. And the family truckster headed to Wally World will have a difficult time finding fuel. So CA will choose strategically located gas stations to subsidize in order to stay open and support out-of-staters. That will be interesting.

Did not know that. Never had the occasion to drive into CA (only fly, being an EC and all). Do they actually man all the roads across the border? I'd imagine that's a huge undertaking. Heck, most states have a hard time manning and operating all the weigh stations. Florida doesn't have anything like that and I suppose they are at risk as well to invasive agriculture.
They have 16 of them - not all are manned all the time, but the interstate ones usually are. California has natural barriers (Ocean, Deserts and Mountains) that separate the main ag areas from the rest of the country, so really the only way for ag pests to get there are to be brought in. Fruit flies are a major concern. Florida doesn't have those natural barriers, so they are somewhat screwed.
Generally the cost of eradicating a pest if it slips through far outweighs the cost of manning the stations.

There would be enough traffic on the interstates to warrant gas stations - many serve primarily travelers in the first place, and even if if meant Disney getting into the Gas Station business, there would be enough around to get by.

Not on all sides - nothing to stop a pest from traveling south from Jersey along I-95 into Florida. Your comparison would only be valid if there was a high mountain range cutting of the state from the rest of the US.CAA Flagship wrote:dbackjon wrote:

Sad.
Ag pests travel north and eventually get killed by Bomb Cyclones. Florida has a perfect setup, thus, no checkpoints.

Listening to Grizaholic ramble on about California is like listening to Trump talk about the Constitution...

Wow. I didn't know that. That's pretty interesting...dbackjon wrote:They have ag checkpoints at the border. Trying to prevent importation of noxious weeds and diseased fruits. Arizona has the same standards as California, so Arizona fruit/produce is good, and normally AZ cars just get waved through.GannonFan wrote:
Do they have checkpoints at the border for that or is that just an airport thing?

1) He is talking only about REGISTERING - Not what the article posted by grizzaholic stated -dbackjon wrote:Winterborn wrote:
So what about tourists driving into the state? Will be a pretty big hit to the state pocket book if they decide to go that route.

1) He is talking only about REGISTERING
2) France, and other European Countries are having the same discussion
3) Chances of this passing in the near future are slim, but it will be the norm eventually.
(Bold is my addition) Registration is something completely different. Technically aren't they already registered through the DMV?Assemblymember Phil Ting says he plans to introduce a bill to prohibit vehicles that use fossil fuels from driving on the state’s roads.
2) France, and other European Countries are having the same discussion - Had, there are many cities in Europe if you do not have a vehicle with clean enough emissions you pay a fine if caught in those areas. Germany is even considering banning older diesel trucks due to CO in the larger cities (Berlin, etc).
3) Chances of this passing in the near future are slim, but it will be the norm eventually. Agree, but with California, who knows. They do have all the Volkswagen money just waiting to be put to the right use.....

When I was visiting Death Valley NP in 2007 I stayed a couple nights on the NV side. Crossed th border from NV into CA a couple of times- was no checkpoint...

It's not a secret where the stations are. As you can see, the I-15 checkpoint is well inland from DVNP (https://goo.gl/maps/1mXQgYud82A2):BDKJMU wrote:When I was visiting Death Valley NP in 2007 I stayed a couple nights on the NV side.
